re: Drinking around your child?

posted 10th Feb '10
When not pregnant I always drink around my son.. I obviously never drive though. But 2 or 3 friends will visit my husband and I, we will eat pizza, drink a couple beers, and rent some movies. If my friends drink too much they spend the night at our apartment. If we go out to eat, I may order a drink, bday parties or celebrations I will have a drink, but it's all done responsibly.

How else can you teach your child to drink responsibly if you don't model responsible drinking for them? Other than that they will see people drinking in high school and think that is how you have fun with alcohol lol which it obviously isn't..

have you never taken your daughter to a restaraunt? b/c I'm sure someone there was drinking.. I'm all for protecting your children the best you can, but you def can go overboard and that's when kids grow up and over indulge in things b/c they weren't ever exposed to them as a child..

I agree with this. I think moderation is key. We drink, our kids know it and we never try to hide it from them. Our oldest (14, my stepson) knows all about it, and he is very smart about alcohol (among other things) because of our ability to discuss and teach about all aspects of life.

ditto... my parents drank around me, gave me a sip when I asked for one just to curb my curiosity lol. I only socially drink now, never had a problem with it in highschool like alot of kids did... but I never received a single talk about drugs, what to do when offered them, why to stay away, not a single word...guess what I had a serious problem with in high school that almost killed me?? BINGO, it was drugs....

exactly!!! my mom was like my best friend growing up. We talked about everything, and I was a very responsible girl because of it. I plan on doing the same thing with my kids.

As long as you're not getting drunk, I fail to see any sort of issue.

Quoting Ms. Von Fate:“ Yes, I drink around my children on a nearly daily basis. I don't get completely wasted, but I do have cocktails, wine, etc.”

My parents did all the time too.

They even gave me sips sometimes. It made me realize I didn't like the taste of most alcohol and it took away the mystery and giddy thrill most teens seem to have of sneaking liquor.

I drink around my kids.

I don't want them growing up thinking you can't drink without getting smurffaced.

I absolutely WANT to drink around my son. I want him to see healthy drinking habits modeled in front of him from day one.

I believe that I should model healthy drinking habits for my children. There is nothing wrong with having a drink or two (or whatever an individual can handle without becoming wasted). The moment you make something secretive , you make it more intriguing to your child. Open and honest communication and modeling are the best bet, IMO.

That's how I feel about alcohol. If my LO gets curious as a young teen, she can try alcohol at home with her father and me so we know she's safe. That way, when she's out, she won't be so phased by alcohol, and will use it responsibly.

I mean, just like kids having sex, kids are going to drink. And just like sex, I want my kids educated and safe about it.

No, I don't agree with it. And my friends all do it and their children are around 3 and understand what beer is. I am the only parent that gets my baby babysat if we're going to drink. And even then, I stay sober while my husband drinks. One of us is always sober. I just don't feel it's right to be in a different state of mind around your child. I feel differently about one drink at dinner or once the baby has gone to bed.
