I don't see anything wrong with what she said. Maybe I missed the part that was supposed to be offensive. But she has her pedi told her her children are becoming overweight, and that she hadn't noticed it, and that she wants to get them on the right track.

I think it's great she isn't in denial, and that she wants to keep her kids healthy and not overweight.

Not a thing in the world wrong with it. It's called empathizing.

I dont think she is hurting her children at all, if her childrens Doctors told her that they are becoming over weight then obviously they needed a change. Childhood obesity isnt taked about very openly because no one wants to admit they have fat kids, like the first lady said, "she thought her kids were perfect". Someone needed to be the first one to speak up and im glad it waas her who did, when i was a child my eating habits were monitered closely, as well as my siblings, i dont think that children should be snaking on crap all day. I think michelle obama is a ballsy woman and is going to change how people look at things, i think she is a wonderfully lady thats helped out alot of people. and now shes going to help out obese children

But she also announced to the media something private about her daughters that I don't think either of them really wanted to ENTIRE world hearing. They might look fine but if they are in fact becoming over weight, do you think those girls really appreciated their mother broadcasting it like that?

I don't know about you, but I would be a little hurt if my parents ever did that to me.

Personally though, I think they look fine. And I think everyone in this country is becoming a little too obsessed with our "obesity epidemic". No wonder so many younger girls have such a distorted self-image now and eating disorders are running rampant.

I think that the girls might be embarassed, or they might not, depending on their personalities and the way they have been brought up.

My daughter has a really thick skin and is really self confident, so when her pedi said she was getting a little chubby (like 10th percentile for height and 25th for weight-before a growth spurt) , she was like "I'm not fat at all, I'm the skinniest girl in my class. I'll just start eating more veggies and treats in moderation." She's 8. But my son, who is 6, gets embarassed really easily and is always worried about looking fat. He's not fat at all though, he's 90th percentile for height AND weight.

I just think that She hopefully knows her daughters well enough to know whether it is a sensitive topic for THEM or not.

I don't think it was necessary for her to announce it to the press, but I don't see anything wrong with her concern.

I just can't see the big deal! And to be honest, if her daughters were crying and morbidley upset about potetionally being overweight, I doubt she would make an announcment to the press if they were mortified by the thought. No one truly knows if she asked for their "permission" or not, but my point is, i'm sure she wanted to use her children as an example, for NOT being ashamed to step up and get "help" before it's too late. Maybe that is JUST the point she is trying to make.

I don't see the problem. She said that the pedi told her they were gaining weight, not that her daughters were cows. Plenty more embarrassing anecdotes have been told by parents.

I don't think an embarrassing anecdote is going to cause a sudden rampage of anorexia.

Me either. And a point I was trying to make is maybe if people were more openly comfortable discussing them being overweight and ways to get help and get through it and have support, it would be much easier!
