Water breaking and c-section

posted 23rd Jan '10
I've never had a c-section but i've wondered...
do they break your water before beginning?
Thanks, I've just always wondered where it would all go while they were operating!

Whenever they get to that part, they poke a hole in the water bag.

But no, they don't go through the vagina beforehand and break your water.

We break the water after we open the uterus if it was intact. Otherwise, if say you water was broken before surgery, we are very carefull going in so as to not cut baby.

my water broke by itself before my c-section, but on all the labor and delivery shows I watch, they just slice through the membrane and it comes gushing out

A hole is poked when is broken through the cervix. During c/s we usually tear at it with one of the instruments, drain the fluid and get the presenting part out.

Thanks, I just wondered. I had a vaginal birth and I just remember it was a lot of water, I just imagined it drenching the surgical staff and wetting the instruments during a c-section.
Curiosity satisfied!

It drenches the person on your left side, since they usually put something under your right side (a pillow, or a rolled up towel) to keep better blood flow to the uterus/placenta while you are laying flat.
