Tensing up on stairs...

posted 22nd Jan '10
We have a two story house. well three counting the basement. When we carry my 3 month old daughter up or down the stairs. no matter how we hold her. She steadily gets more and more tense til she can barely make herself breathe. Then when we get to the top/bottom she relaxes and then starts to cry hysterically like we just put her through a wringer.

Anyone experience this?

No, but your daughter must be really smart to realize or care she's on stairs!

I don't know about the whole stairs thing, but a baby I used to babysit for was tense 24/7.. Like so bad that his arms were always locked into a right angle and it was impossible to get him to relax them.
I have no idea why he did that... I always thought it was gas, but I could never get anything out of him. He cried alllllllll the time.. drove me insane.

its bad. We are having to stop on the landing and pace back and forth to get her to chill enough to breathe

I would just drape a receiving blanket over her head while you're walking down the stairs.. trick her so she doesn't know she's going down stairs.

Both my girls did this....I was told it was a phase. It shows their little equilibrium is developing. Just hold on tight, and go down slow. Talk to her the whole time and she will adjust. Now my girls think it's fun to go down the stairs, and I bounce a little just to make them laugh.

Both of my kids did it. Ive never talked to a doctor about it because I realized that if I just shift their position and walk slow, they eased up. i didn't realize it was uncommon. Neither of my kids had colic.
