antibiotics not curing ear infection

posted 1st Jan '10
my son has an ear infection in both ears so his doctor perscribed a 10 day dose of amoxicilin,my sonfinished the antibiotics yesterday and I never once missed a dose and he got it at the same time 3 X a day. The first couple daysI gave him the medicine, he stopped pulling on his ears, but about half way into it he started yanking on them again and now hes pulling on them just as much as he was before. Im going to call the doctor tommorow, is it possible that the medicine didn't work? Also laterly I've noticedhe has VERY foul smelling urine and I was wondering if that was a sign of a bladder infection in babies.

My daughter had stubborn ear infections so they had to give her something stronger than Amoxicillin...than after that didn't work she had to get tubes

My LO recently had an ear infection, they also put him on Amoxicillin. But it gave him bad diarrhea so we switched him to something else.
Which worked better.
Maybe call his pedi?

the foul smell is probably just the amox. it always makes my daughters pee smell bad. As for the antibiotic not working...this is COMPLETELY possible and happens all the time. The next thing they will give him is going to more than likely be Augmentine. Amox does not work for my daughter anymore...she had to have it so much that her body just rejected the antibiotic. We had a lot of issues with her ears. She has tubes now!

It is very possible. Many docs will not prescribe antibiotics for ear infections any more because 70% of them are viral, and if antibiotics are prescribed, the child is more likely to have another ear infection in the following 6 weeks.

Once you start down the path of using antibiotics for ear infections though it is important to follow through to avoid drug resistant bacteria. I'd call your pedi and ask what to do.

also, you should give your child yogurt when they are on an antibiotic so that they dont lose their "good" probiotics. It will help with the diarrhea as well!

I tried calling his doctor back today and of course the smurfers are closed or didn't answer. It pisses me off so much that I can NEVER get a hold of them. My poor baby won't barely eat at all, hes not really congested anymore but hes persistently pulling on ears, hes playing and not acting sick, but when I go to give him his bottle or food, he never wants to take it. Im having a really hard time, for the last couple weeks, hes only ate bottles, about 30 oz a day, andstarting today and yesterdayhe refuses his bottle and whenhehad his morning bottle hethrew it up, all he will eat is baby food, and I have to force him to eat it. Ughhhh I think there is more of a problem....could he be more sick than I think? Also hes not sleeping as much as he used to, hes been waking up in the middle of the night...but then again he has a tooth about to pop through at the top.

Ear infections are even more painful when they swallow...which is why you little guy doesnt want to eat. When he lays down the pressure from his ears is unbearable which is why he probably isnt sleeping. Does he have a swing? does he like his carseat? those are both options to keep him elevated when hes asleep...which will help with the pressure until the infection clears up. You can also raise the head of the mattress, roll up towels or extra pillows and put them under the mattress to elevate it.
Good luck mama.....and if you can't get a hold to his ped when needed I'd find a new one!

Oh I didn't know that it hurt him to swallow, he always yanks on his ear when hes drinking.....I just put him down to bed, he didn't burp after his bottle because he fell asleep. Is it bad to put a pillow in his crib to elevate him? I've read never to do it, but I didn't know any other way, but I', going to try what you said, it sounds like a good idea.
