Public Service Announcement

posted 23rd Dec '06
I already know this will be wildly unpopular, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

*This is a public service announcement*

Changing the spelling of a name doesn't make it unique or original. It's still the same name. Generally, all it does is confuse people, and occasionally it makes people question your sanity (for the especially strange variations).

You are NOT the only person to ever think of changing the spelling of a name. If you've thought of it, so have 1,000 other people. I guarantee it.

Once again, changing the spelling of a name does NOT make your child unique. Trust me, children are all unique, they don't need their names mangled to make them so. Also, remember that while YOU want your child to be unique, children generally want nothing more than to be accepted and not to stick out like a sore thumb.

Yeah, yeah, yeah it's your kid. Name it whatever you want. Just remember that your little girl is not going to be the only Maddissyn, your son will not be the only Aydin, and children can hold grudges for a long, long time.

*end public service announcement, put on flame retardant suit*

Not a bad public service announcement at all! I do agree with you. Of course, I'm older (going to be a grandma soon). My daughter is going to name her baby girl Angel Elise. My daughter's name is Kasey (yes, not Casey), but that's not an unpopular spelling. The main reason I named my daughter with a "K" (well actually 2 reasons) - 1) at the time (18 years ago) most boys named Casey spelled it with a "C"; 2) With a "K", my daughter's initials would be KC - get it?

Again, I totally agree with you. Best of luck.

that might be true, but it's nice to be different and do things/spell things your own way. I'm naming my daughter Audree which would normally be spelt Audrey, although it's not a popular name I like it spelt different just because I like the way I want it spelt better than the way it actually is.

I completely agree. Although there are two ways to spell my name, Tara and Terra, there are two differant meanings to the differant spelling, so I can see changing the spelling to go with the meaning you want.

You are my new hero today. All "uneek" spelling is going to do is make sure your kid ends up having to tell people a million and one times how to spell their name correctly.

I think the most important thing is not to "mis-spell" the name. For example, if you are naming your boy Michael, don't spell it Micheal. Names ending in EE instead of EY are fine by me. I think Audree is cute for example. I've seen some terrible spellings that just make it hard to prounce. I know someone named Genia and it's pronounced Gena. Make sure people can pronounce your baby's name - that will be half the battle.

I always valued that my mother spelled my name differently I think It made me feel seperate from all the other 1 billion Holly's in the world (im Hollie) .

Spelling is a personal choice just like the name. If a person is confused about how it is pronounced then just explain it to them.

I kinda agree if it is just to be different then what is the real point. I did name my daughter Katelynn. Spelled just how it sounds. There are like 300 (i know this is an exageration) spellings for Kaitlyn, Caitlin,.......... My husband and I could not agree on how to spell the Kate part. (He wanted to spell it Cat--- Catlynn LOL) Um... i was like no that spells cat lynn not caitlin. I wanted the last part to be Lynn which is my mother and aunt's middle names (not to mention my own, but my name is not why I wanted it) I wanted to call her Katie and thought spelling it Kate would make it easier to shorten to Kate or Katie. So that is my reasoning for having a different spelling although her name was spelled wrong again today by someone who usually spells it right. (she spelled it Kaitlynn) The most common mistake is leaving out the last n though. (Odly enough.) I think I am just going to teach her to go with the stride. If it isn't on an official paper then just let them spell it wrong. We know what her name is and the meaning behind it and that is all that matters! :-) I rarely ever correct someone if they are spelling her name wrong unless I think it is going to cause a land slide of people thinking that is how her name is spelled. She is only 19 months so we will see how she handles it all when she knows how to spell. LOL :-)

My name is actually very unique and I love it !!

I don't mind that people mis spell or mis pronounce it

Rmenda

It was my grandma's middle name and her grandma's first name (she came over on the trail of tears with the other cherokee indian's).

I'm very proud of my name and where it came from

If we have a daughter we have consider passing my name on as her middle name.

I don't think my name made me anymore different or special than anyone else but I still love my name.

My name has always been mispelled, in school, military, everywhere, people speel it lindsey or lindsay. But either way I love my name, and I love the spelling and the fact that my mom wanted to make it special for me..Lyndsey [not so rare anymore]. I think that if you feel happier with a name spelled a certain way your child is going to love it. Its not that big of a deal how you choose to spell your childs name.
