im so late to this thread but hey. I ABSOLUTELY agree to the op.
I also can't stand regular old classic names....like Ashley and Brittany.
I always think of 80 y/olds named "brittany" "ashley" "nicole" ... when you think of elderly people... you think of classic names like Mary, or Maria, or Sadie or Victoria.
just to think... reading off a nursing home list and you see
"Tyqwoniesha" ya think to urself...."what a horrible childhood she had just because of her name"
cant beat the story i know of boy/girl twins from a crackhead mother.....named "Male" and "Female" ... she was on crack... and read her birthchart... and saw the words male and female.... and named her kids that! CRAZY!
now the boy has to live being called "Female" prounounced for entertainment "Femme- mall- eee" and "Mall- eee"... Male for the baby girl.
sad.
so sad.
people always trying to put personal touches thinking it is uniqueness...when sometimes is sheer stupidity....and they try TOO hard to be different that is becomes tacky instead.
ah well.
if mine is a girl...her name will be Elaysia....because she is a part of me. and my middle name is Alycia. so I changed3 letters.... which IS different because I have never heard a name sound similar, pretty, and that is actually significant in a personal way.
my name for my girl kicks ass to me. and it doesnt sound stupid, doesn't look to complicated...and the average person should be able to read it and say less than a 3rd try....
which is better than most made up crappy names.

and i figure.... since MY middle name isn't average itself..and is already unique, I like it... but didnt want her to have my EXACT name, because she is her own little person. to i took part of the name.
I agree with changing average ass names with wierd spellings tho.
Brittany....Brittani, Britni, Britaney....Boo!

I know my daughter's name will be always be mispronounced and misspelled but oh well. I named her after the Goddess Morrigan (her spellling is Morigan)for a reason. Even at 4 she has the traits I hoped her name would instill in her. She is independent and strong with a warrior/protector spirit. I did give her 2 'regular' middle names so she can always use one of those if she wants. There is a point where names can just be over the top but in the end it is the parents choice and the child can always change their name when they get older if they truely hate the one given them. As my Grandma told myAunt when she said she hated her name Dianna Elizabeth
"I named you for a Goddess and a Queen, what more could you want?"

I just found this...and God...I love you for it
Whats wrong with normal names? I just dont understand. Alot of people say I'm old fashioned with my childrens names (Timothy and Rebecca) but people know how to pronounce them and generally know how to spell them. *shrugs*...theres a trillion Madysins and what nots just like you say.....
Wow, I'm really late on this one ha ha. You posted it on my daughters birthday 2 months ago

Well some people are begging us to change the spelling of our girl's middle name. I won't because even though in the US it doesn't sound the way it's spelled, it's an Irish name and we're using the original spelling. So we are spelling it Siobhan (it's pronounced Shavonne) and people want us to spell it Shavonne, but if it was meant to be spelled that way the Irish would have done it in the first place. So Siobhan it is.

But that's an ACTUAL name, I think the OP meant she disliked "creative" spellings. Don't change the spelling of yours! My best friend's whole family is from Ireland and they all have Gaelic names like that. I actually get annoyed when people spell it "Shavonne", it's just.....wrong!!!

Yep I think that "Shavonne" is just wrong too. Siobhan it is. People think that her first name is a "creative spelling" of a US name, but it's not, the name we are using is an Australian name and we are using the Australian spelling. It's even pronounced slightly different. WE are NOT naming her Kira or Keira, so we aren't spelling it that way, we're naming her Kirra. (We wanted to use an Australian name as I'm Australian and we wanted to pass on some of my heritage to her). So it will be Kirra Siobhan. Two legitimate names from other countries spelled correctly despite what people here think haha.

I think Siobhan is lovely, it's on my girl list!

It's the Irish equivalent of Joan, which is my mom's name. She doesn't like her name, but likes Siobhan and I would love to use it to honor her.

No way would I change the spelling!

It amazes me how unworldly most people are!! I have a former friend like that. She can't "stand" when people have any sort of foreign accent, British included   She's barely left California. My daughter's name is Polish (after my grandmother) (Alina) and people think that I made it up. Sooooo silly!!!!

I partially agree with you, but then again I don't. I mean if youre going to name your child something like Abigail, spelling it Abbygale is a little extreme, and does sort of change the pronunciation of it. But I think it you don't go too extreme than it's just fine. If you look in baby name books they have the origin spelling of the name with a lotof different choices to pick from below it.I have thought a lot of my baby names ex: Kelsey. I'm not fond of theEY on the end, mostly because my name is Chelsea and everyone misspelled my name with an EY growing up, not because it's unique but because there are many different ways to spell it. I thought of Kelsie from an oldoffice lady at my school always misspelling my name Chelsie & I like it better that way. It's not that my mom gave me a unique spelling because you see itspelledlike that a lot if you are searching through baby names.
Not only that, but Makena is a name Iam very fond of as well. Makena means happy one. Mackenna means something of a handsome man.Sometimes the spelling just changes the meaning and that's why someone spells it different.
Although I agree, if you are doing it to be unique there will always be another person out there that does the same thing. You just have to have the right purpose behind what you are doing. Either way its your decision, regardless.

I want to add to that, don't name your children all the same thing - its not quite the same rant but closeish.
Give your kids individual names.

I have a cousin who has four sons all with the first name David, and the youngest has a middle name of Colonel - what on earth are we supposed to call the kid?

hmm I named my youngest son 'Ayden' just because it made sense to spell it like that, I think that's how I actually found it in a baby book. Come to find out EVERYONE misspells it but oh well.
