Doc increased rice cereal!!

posted 13th Aug '07
My son has acid reflux, and for a little over a week 1 baby spoonful of rice cereal in every 5 oz bottle has helped him not spit up big time. Well over the last couple of days there have been some feedings were he would spit up like crazy, so I called the doctor today. He told me to put one tablespoon of rice cereal for every ounce, in every bottle and to follow up on Wed.   I am still using the baby spoon, but now adding 4 more to every bottle, not quite ready to move up to that tsp scoop yet. So far he is doing good after his 1st bottle with 5 baby spoonfuls of rice cereal.
Anyone else have to use this much with their reflux babies? Any long term sucess with this much rice cereal?

I have to put 1 tsp of cereal for every once of fromula. It has worked wonders it's harder than heck to get it out of the bottle but it's working! and has for 2 months now.

That's good to hear that it has been successful for you. What I give Kenny now comes out to be a 1/2 tsp per oz. I was afraid anymore would be too thick for him. Did you have to cut a slit in the nipples for him to get out he formula.
I have Kenny on the #2 nipples (avent bottles) now, but I don't think that it is big enough to let out that much rice cereal and formula.

did you ever try the pre-thicken formula. I use similac sensative rs. Its pre-thickened with rice starch. I never used cereal in the bottle for my son's reflux this stuff seems to work good for him.

We have considered it, but doctor doesn't want us to switch his formula yet. We are leaving that option open though. Thank you for the suggestion.

Kenny is now up to 4 teaspoons in his 5 oz bottles, I have been gradually increasing him. He spit up a bit over night when he was at 3 teaspoons, and even vomitted pretty forcefully with the second bottle. His last bottle was the first one with 4 teaspoons and so far so good. Keeping my fingers crossed.
The funny thing is, with all the cereal, he is getting hungry now 3 1/2 - 4 hours after eating. He went longer before all that cereal, any one else's kid do the same thing?
