re: Infant CPR

Thanks for posting this as a sticky!
We just took a tour of our brand new hospital and of course the L&D department. They made us watch a 30 minute video with "mini-baby" demonstration of Infant CPR. Excellent idea!!! They should make all expectant parents take this short and informative class. It could be the difference between life and death.

Before my baby brother was born, I went to a class with my grandparents, sister, and aunt at babies r us. It was really helpful and even though (thank god) I haven't had to use it yet, it's nice to know that I will know what to do is the problem ever does arise. They also told about some helpful baby proofing tips.

I we start our cpr classes next week. Really excited about it. Hope they tell us a bit about the hymlick(spelled wrong) i hope that of course i never have to use this but if it comes up that i will be able to keep myself calm enough to do so.
We have the classes free at the red cross here for pregnant women and a partner so thats great. We will each be teaching anyone who might be watching our baby. Gma's, uncles, ect.

I know in my area alot of the Fire Houses for the fire dept usually have free cpr for you or anyone in the community a couple times a month. A good way to save money !!!

Your local hospitals usually offer CPR classes for infants and they go over all the important things, including choking, which is the most common reason for a child to require CPR or any kind of recusistation. I am a nurse and am CPR and PALS (pediatric advanced life support) cerified, but when we were expecting our first child I made my husband take the course at the hospital. Poor man was then only single parent at the class since I didn't need it. Everyone should take a class. A quick response can save your child's life should the need arise.

I am an EMT and certified through American Heart Association to train CPR classes. American Heart is much cheaper than Red Cross, so if you can take a class through them it's actually quite a difference in price. Also, as helpful as a video is online demonstrating, the hands on experience of a class and experience of the instructors. There are many things that you can learn from a class that you will not learn from a quick instructional video.
Most hospitals will offer infant CPR classes and they are reasonably priced. It's a great thing to look into taking if you are a new parent to be. Another thing to look into would be a pediatric first aid course. Just some useful things.

Hey, thanks for posting that. I will be a first time mom and I have been think about infant CPR.

I used the heimlich on a baby for the first time over a vacation.
My brother was eating oranges and began choking. My mom, being the nervous wreck she is just began yelling "He's choking!" over and over again. Since we took that class I knew exactly what to do. I held him over my knee, swat him on the back 5 times, and put my pinky in fishing for the oranges and I got them all out. The second I put him back down he reached for another orange and was fine, but I felt so happy that I had taken that class.
So ladies, I would suggest taking a class that has both CPR and heimlich, you may just save a life!

I'm also CPR certified for adults, children and infants (my bf and I took a course a few months ago). It does give me piece of mind knowing that we were both trained, but I'm a little bit worried that I don't quite remember a whole lot of what was taught. I remember some but it is a lot of information to remember. I have a really bad memory. But yeah, that's another story!

MRD's Mommy,
Don't worry too much about what you remember and don't. I'm an instructor and I tell all my students that even after taking the class, it's a skill you aren't using and will most likely forget some of and not feel overly confident on. No need to panic. According to AHA Guidelines, when CPR is needed on an infant or child, you're going to perform CPR for two minutes before calling. I tell everyone that if you have a telephone handy, or a cell phone in your pocket, don't be afraid to call 911 and put the phone on speaker. The 911 Dispatchers are EMD trained, so they will actually tell you step by step what you are supposed to do so if you forget they are there to help. You can always just tell them you are cpr certified and can't remember in the heat of the moment and they'll walk you through step by step.
We all have bad experiences, and are afraid of having to deal with a true emergency. Just remember there are people out there. I'm an EMT so being a first time mother I'm absolutely paranoid and petrified as to what could happen to my child. One thing is for certain, after calls I've seen and stories I've heard my child will NEVER come to bed with me as an infant. Just things we learn along the way.
Good luck and try not to worry too much.

I took an Baby Safety/Infant CPR class about 2 wks ago! It was really informative! Now i'm ready if the unexpected happens! I would suggest every mom or mom-to-be to take an infant cpr class! You never know if it could happen to your child until it does!
