Hearing two heartbeats on Doppler

posted 11th Dec '09
Just wondering if you were pregnant with twins, would you hear two heartbeats on the doppler at the same time, or would you hear just one beating in unison or would you have to locate the two heartbeats in two different locations? I am showing really fast and my uterus is much higher than normal for 12 weeks. I have my appointment next friday and was wondering this about the heartbeat!

No, no....thats not what I mean, lol....sorry if that was confusing! Like, if you were pregnant with twins, when you use the doppler.....would you be able to distinguish two heartbeats at the same time? What would it sound like? Or would it just sound like one?

Last time I was at L&D my nurse asked if I was having twins because she could hear two different heartbeats. I know I only have one in there. The heartbeat can be heard from the baby, the cord and the placenta and depending on the location of each in relation to each other can produce three different sounding heartbeats, when they're actually all the same.

Im guessing that you would be able to hear the mums heartbeat which is slower and then 2 faster heartbeats not beating at the same time. As the pregnancy progresses you would be able to pick up 2 heartbeats in different locations..

Not sure tho, but it makes sense to me.

(((Just so you know, babies can hide on ultrasound.....sure you don't have twins? <3)))
I know that you can hear different sounds with the doppler but the reason I ask is because the other day I was watching a show on discovery channel and a woman was hearing her baby's heartbeat with the doppler and you could hear both heartbeats at the same time and I was wondering if this was the normal for everyone?

Oh I get what you're asking.
When I was pregnant with twins, they had different heartbeats. They were clearly different, however some twins have hearts that beat in unison.

The show I saw, you could hear the two heartbeats along side each other, like two galloping horses.....it was sweet!

I miscarried my 1st twin before I even knew he existed so I never got to hear it on doppler

Was that how you discovered you were carrying twins?

I just goggled it and found that if you find two different heartbeats and they have to distinct different bpm then that could be an indication of twins!
