pre abortion ultrasounds?

posted 11th Aug
Should women be forced to see an ultrasound before recieving an abortion?

http://abcnews.go.com/US/Story?id=2958249&page=1

The article has points for both sides, but I dont see why pro choicers are against it, i mean it is giving the women information so she can make an informed choice. I think some women make the choice without realizing that the baby is not just a mass of cells. I believe this law would only have positive effects.

I know there are alot of debate topics on abortion already and I am not trying to start one again. I am just curious on your opinions on this potential law

I think its a great idea, and not just because im pro-life. I agree that I think it is a good way to better educate people about what they are doing. And it could also help reduce the numbers of abortions, which I think is the goal here, and I dont see why pro-choicers are against this, because shouldnt they too, want to reduce the numbers? just because you believe a woman should have the choice doesnt mean you have to agree with the choice.

I'm really iffy about this.

I'm Pro-Choice all the way. I think in one way it's a really good idea, help better educate people about the decision they are making because I think in some cases they aren't.

However, I also think it's cruel. If someone has come to this decision, feels like this is the ONLY way to go & has given a lot of thought to it .. it just makes it that much harder on them.

Abortion is something that 99% of women (the ones who don't use it for BC anyways) have to live with for the rest of their lives. They think about it daily, though they may not regret it. Adding an image to that (with an u/s) would just make it that much worse.

That being said, it makes it a great way to stop so many people from having them, since they know they would have to live with that for the rest of their lives.

I do see where youre coming from though, I guess Im just looking at it more in the bigger picture.

I know that a lot of the people on just this forum have talked about the regrets either they or someone they know had b/c they had an abortion, but were uninformed and that they'd never had one "if they knew." So yeah, I think it'd be a good idea, in my opinion.

yea I think it would be hard on the women to see the fetus in an ultrasound but I think it would be worse if she wasn't aware of how developed it was and later in life she might find out and regret the choice she made. I know I was shocked by how developed my little peanut was at the early stages of this pregnancy.

I think it would also help women to see the gravity of the situation and be more careful in the future, since close to 1/2 the women who have one abortion have a second one later in life and 20% will go on to have a third.

The women I would feel bad for were the ones that were raped, but then again that goes back to the original point that its better she knows whats shes doing now rather then later down the road when she cant change her decision

i am pro-choice and think that the woman should see the ultrasound image and the heartbeat. maybe if they see that they have a viable fetus inside of them, they will make a different choice and not go through with the abortion. but above all, it is the woman's choice.

I'm pro-choice and I think it would be a great idea! I do think it would be difficult to enforce though. I don't see what's wrong with giving women the opportunity to be more informed before they make a decision that will effect them for the rest of their lives!

I think it should only be given if the mother is chosing to abort her baby. If she has to because of medical reasons or if she was raped, or if her parents are making her get one then i dont think its right. I only think it should be done if the girl just had sex and got pregnant and then decided she didnt want the baby. But if its being forced on her or she really has to have it done because of medical reasons, then i dont think its right to add more trauma to the sitiuation. Thats my opion.

I guess I just assume that if you are old enough to have sex and old enough to read, you are gonna understand that your baby is developing and it's no longer a mass of cells at 8 weeks. You don't need to see an ultrasound of it. That would be like making you take your baby home for a couple of days before you give it up for adoption. If you've already made the decision then it is just rubbing salt in the wound. But again, I assume that if you are over the age of... say 15... then you should know that your baby has a heartbeat and I would think that if your one that cares whether or not there is a heartbeat you would research that info before choosing to abort anyway. I think lots of times people like to "claim" stupidity and say they wouldn't have done it had they known that the baby had a beating heart... but I personally think most of them would have done it anyway... they just don't want to tell people that.

I don't think anyone should be "forced" to look at it.

But I think it should be offered. Many women would possibly change their minds after seeing the ultrasound and seeing a heartbeat.

But forced, no.

I think that is a good idea. However I think they should ask you not force you to see it. When I was 17 years old and faced with the choice that I choose, I made the call to the clinic first, I asked if I should see a doctor first and they said no, come here. When I did, they did a ultrasound, but wouldnt let me see it. I wish that I had the chance to, I never realized how far along I was and how delveloped the baby was. I think it should be a option for sure though.

I think it's a very good idea.

I think a lot of girls/women would change their minds if they saw that bouncing peanut on the screen.

I think it should be used as an option. But NOT forced. No one should be FORCED to do anything..

Which goes back to why I'm pro-choice.

I think this is a great idea. It's so frustrating to hear people say, "Oh, it's just a blob and not really a baby yet, or it doesn't even have a heartbeat until way later on." A girl argued with me one time on the heartbeat issue when I told her that I saw my daughters on the ultrasound at 6 weeks. She kept telling me I was lying and that she knew for a fact that babies don't have heartbeats until 10-12 weeks! I was on yahoo answers one time where the topic was abortions and I couldn't believe how many people were saying the exact same thing - that there is no heartbeat until 10-12 weeks and that it's not considered a living thing without a heartbeat. I really think it would make people think twice if they actually saw the heartbeat and realize it's not just a blob or a bunch of cells.
