I know. it's ridiculous really. at least there is no one in here saying BFing is bad, period. I see no problem w/ it when they are still young, 3-4, maybe 5. But I see no reason why a 10-yr-old should continue to BF. or a 7-yr-old. that is my personal opinion & idc who likes it or not

there is nothing wrong w/ BFing to me, except like I said before, I don't see it necessary or as beneficial past a certain age. no, not because it is sexual.

I know that I am super late to this but I just wanted to say that if I was you then I would tell them flat out to mind their own damn business, although I would probably insert "fucking" instead of "damn". I hate that as parents we get everyone telling us how we are doing things wrong. You are the child's mother so you know what's best (for the most part). And besides your baby is only a year old, that's no where near too old to still be bf'ing. And on the subject of bf'ing an 8 year old, if you want to more power to you, I just hope I never have to see it.

I had someone tell me I shouldn't BF my son because it would cause attachment issues, like he would always be too attached to me. Well I knew that was ridiculous, but when you're still nursing in like 5th grade, I do feel like that would cause attachment issues. There is a time when you neeed to start becoming independant, and breastafeeding after you do your homework doesnt seem like gaining independance to me. Personal opinion, If you have the will power to nurse til age 2 or 3 or whatever, more power to ya, I probably will only nurse my son another month or so.

Was there any reason you were going to force him to wean so early? or just a personal choice?

"force him to wean" is kind of a harsh way of putting it, considering right now I'm pretty much FORCING him to continue BFing and we spent about 5-10 minutes of him crying and me squirting milk into his mouth before he'll even TRY to latch. So don't be so quick to judge please. Ever since he started solids he just doesn't seem as interrested in BFing. Don't ask me why, but my lactation consultant said some babies just do that, they like to have control as in holding their own bottle or whatever. Plus in January my SO is being deployed and I will be going to school full time and working, and I don't expect to be able to keep up with the pumping. When I pump I barely get a half an ounce total. I had planned on continuing to BF him during night feedings but he sleeps through the night now and doesnt need to eat.

I cant pump really at all either. But I have a great supply, I just cant let down for the pump. I wasnt judging. It is very unnatural for a child to wean themselves prior to 9-12 months. It sounds like a nursing strike. Which is very easily fixed. They can last a few days up to a few weeks. Solids fill him up but he still needs some sort of milk.

see i hear you all bitching about an 8 year old, when i got told a story of a woman who had 13 kids and bf until their HS years. fuckin 16 years old son comes home with his girlfriend, lays down on the couch and starts nursing.

now that IS a little much. but cmon. a child is a child is a child. they need whatever it is that its providing for them.

my only bit of wisdom is you never deny a nursing child the boob.

If I was 16 and my boyfriend did that I would have to break up with him. I don't think I could kiss a guy after his mom's boob has been in his mouth.

I don't think its a nursing strike because its been going on for about a month now. BF has always been difficult for us. It's pretty much been a fight since day 1. He was on a shield for a while and I finally got him off it but now he's back on and its the only way he'll eat. And I think since it feels similar to his teething rings he likes to chew on the shield, and it hurts like a motherfucker! We can't go a full feeding without me wanting to scream from the pain lol
