7 year old with computer

posted 3rd Dec '09
I am just wondering people's opinion on this because I wasn't sure what to think of this...

We know this couple who has a 7 year old girl and a 1 year old son. They never want to deal with the 7 year old so she is always told to go outside and play or go up to her room. They are the type of people who like to have nice things and want nicer things than everyone else. The husband is in the marine corps and the wife does not work, so, they are not rich. The last time we went over there the 7 year old was so excited to show me the brand new computer her parents just bought her.

My parents were well off financially when I was her age and I did not have a computer. I know times are much different now though, kids get cell phones really young now ( she also has one). Any parents out there with 7 year olds think that is normal or is it too young in your opinion?

My 7 year old goes on our FAMILY computer, but I wouldnt ever buy her her own, and if I DID for some weird reason, it sure the hell wouldn't be in her room where I couldnt see it. Lol.

really?

or as my 7 year old calls them "cella-phone"

I probably wouldn't let my child have a computer in her room at that age...but my younger siblings have their own computer for games and such, they all share it.... Since she is the only child old enough to use a computer I don't think it's that far off base I suppose.

WAY too young!! At least to have her own computer.. I don't think it would be wrong if you sat with her on it for like 10 minutes a day with a barbie game or something, but for her to have her own computer is ridiculous, and a cell phone too? Wow.

My nephew has had a computer since about that age. He uses it to play games, go to websites that his teacher recommends for learning etc. He is GREAT at it. (He does not get to use it all the time though) and it wasn't brand new. It was a hand me down from me, that I gave to my sister, and after she bought herself a new one, gave it to him.

My kids play educational games ona desktop computer, supervised. It was second hand, and I got it for them. I don't think it's too much. They should be familiar with computers because it's important to know how to operate them. Now, if the kid is on it more often than they are playing or having family time, I'd think there was a problem.

ok that's kind of what I thought, especially since it's connected to the internet.

I used to nanny for a couple who had two little girls. Their youngest was one (now two) and their oldest was four (now five). They gave her an old computer they had sitting around to play her Pooh game on because she kept crashing & destroying their actual nice/newer computer, but I would never personally buy a brand new computer for a 7 year old. Hell, I didn't get my own comp. til I was 19.

ETA: and no way in hell would I give a kid her age a cell phone

I got my 7 yr old a laptop for his bdayonly because his daddy stays on the main computer(he's in school ) and Brian never had time to get on it .

He has limited access to nickjr.com and other websites where he can play games and learn .

my kids share our old computer and it is setup to where they can only go to websites that are made for kids nickjr, webkins, stuff like that. It has a message that pops up when my 11 yr old tried to check her email.... I think 7 might be to young and I would never purchase any child their own computer.

My 7 yr old cousin has an i phone and a facebook page. I think its insane to let your children have such expensive things. It's different when they are using them for eduacational purposes, but I don't classify facebook as educational.

My cousin who'll be 13 this coming June has a MySpace and I think even that is over the top.

It's disgusting. I once saw a 10-year-old with a cell phone when I was living in Florida and I was like "..."   What the hell does a 10-year-old need a cell phone for? I realize the texting generation is getting younger and younger but no.
