Broccoli allergy.

posted 1st Dec '09
How freaking weird. Liv had pureed broccoli in her baby food and all that. Tonight for the first time I gave her broccoli cut up, and she ended up having an allergic reaction. She was almost instantly covered from head to toe in hives and spiked a fever, the ER confirmed it was an allergy to broccoli.

My poor baby, but atleast she's okay. We gave her, her medicine and now she's sleeping soundly.

Did this happen to anyone else? Fine with a food then suddenly not? so weird.

It happened to me as an adult. Not sure about my childhood, but I was fine with something one week and had an anaphalactic reaction not even 7 days later. Sorry it happened to you, mama. I bet it was scary!

it was! I didn't notice it while she was eating, then I started to clean her off and there were just hives everywhere. But she's okay atleast.

Did her throat start to close or anything? Hives SUCK! I know when I had my reaction I got all itchy and when I got to the ER my blood pressure was super high and then just bottomed out. Everyone freaked out.

I'm sure they probably told you, but just keep an eye on her. Kids with one food allergy usually have more than one. Good news is she can grow out of it! I grew out of most of my food allergies from when I was little.

No luckily it didn't get that far, but she was red from head to toe. they gave her a shot of prednisilone (sp) there and tomorrow we start it orally for 5 days.

Ugh, that stuff sucks! The shot isn't bad, but when you get older and have the stupid tabs, they dissolve BEFORE you even get the chance to swallow them and they're nasty as hell. I hope it doesn't taste that bad in a liquid. Poor little thing! As horrible as this is to say, I'm glad it was hives and not an anaphalactic reaction. I hope she feels better soon!

Oh I know. Jeff kept saying we needed to wait but when we found out she was allergic to strawberries it got bad and i wasnt risking it again. And thank you, I hope so too! she's finally asleep, but ugh.

I don't blame you at all! Allergic reactions aren't something to mess with...especially with little ones! She'll be okay though and she's sleeping so don't stress! You did the right thing and at least now you know, right? You did awesome, hun!

Thank you! It is so scary, I don't have any food allergies so its a completely new thing for me.

Yeah, I totally understand. Food allergies can be completely unpredictable too so you can never know enough, you know? The best advice I have is keep in touch with her pedi and just be aware of "like" or "family" foods. Other than that it's all just really trial and error. A few months or a few years from now she might LOVE broccoli and be just fine.

It sucked when I was little because I was allergic to milk. Full-on allergic too. My mom just introduced it slowly again and I'm fine with it now (with the exception of pregnancy).

You know what to look for, just be aware and you might talk to her pedi about things you can do at home in case things get bad. They don't really recommend benadryl for babies under 1, but they DO have baby dosages so maybe something to consider. Prednisone just sucks. Ooh and be aware that it'll likely weaken her immune system a pretty decent amount for the next month or so. No one warned me and I got bronchitis after a round of it

I was some what the same way! they thought it was a lactos issue but come to find out I had stomach migraines, and milk was the trigger, now Im fine and dont get them anymore.

Thank you so much about telling met hat about prednisolone. Yeah they told me try benadryl from now on if it happens but idk what dosage i would use so i would have to find that out.

The first thing I did was stuck her in teh bath. i didnt use soap or anything but just incase it was irritating her skin from the outside too i could get it all rinsed off, then i put her in jammies and we went tothe ER.

I was looking before (because I'm weird and just curious) and I found this chart for the benadryl dosage. I'd still double check that with the pedi though. Benadryl is a wonderful, wonderful thing for allergies, but if it ever gets more than just hives or if it doesn't go down significantly with the benadryl, don't be afraid to take her in!

Yeah, prednisone is awesome when you're having a reaction, but afterwards, it bites! No one ever warned me and I'd always wonder why I'd get SO sick after a round. There was one point that I was having ridiculous amounts of reactions and they had me on prednisone every other week. I got bronchitis for the first time that year and then strep three times in the six months after. I didn't put two and two together until like six months later, lol
