How do pacifiers prevent SIDS?

posted 20th Nov
I've always heard that they do, but how?

Also, I know that SIDS isn't completely preventable, but I know that there are preventative measures such as not putting baby on belly to sleep, not having blankets and stuffed animals in crib, etc. What others are there?

And to mommies of angel babies who had SIDS, I'm so very sorry for your loss and I honestly didn't make this thread with the intention of upsetting anyone.

It encourages the child to suck, therefore they are breathing and alive.

If it is true, I would think because it is something there that reminds them to suck, and in turn, breathe. Some studies seem to think that SIDS is caused by an involuntary part of baby's brain "forgetting" to breathe.

If you can't have blankets with them when their first born, what about the winter babies [first time mommyy....]

Try have a fan running in the room but not pointed at his face. Also no crib bumpers or anything else in the crib. Dont dress him too warm nor not enough.

Pacifier prevents them from falling into such a deep sleep that they stop breathing- they stay somewhat more conscious to suck.

Breastfeeding and cosleeping are two good ways to reduce SIDS as well. Having baby sleep with you in your room for the first 6 months also lowers the risk as well. Not smoking (you or your partner) helps as well.

There are other things that are being studied, too- plastic liners on crib mattresses, new products like cribs & mattresses needing to off-gas (air out so the toxic chemicals used in processing & manufacturing disappate into the air), etc.

Fleece sleepers and sleep sacks....or swaddle them. Also, keep the house at a comfortably warm temp.

Swaddle is me favorite

haha no seriously it also stops the involuntary arm fling that wakes them up

Get warm sleepers. Try fleece and/or sleep sacks. They sell them at BRU.

I like them! They are pretty nifty...LOL. Adrienne won't wear them anymore though....she gets mad when she can't grab her feet. LOL.

and actually- that's part of the back to sleep thing. Babies don't sleep as soundly when they're on their backs so they're more likely to keep breathing.

Side sleeping is second best. For DD, I would NEVER ever ever put her to sleep on her back because she would vomit in her sleep. Scary.

They keep the air way open because the binky shouldnt go all the way to the back of their throat. and it also usually allows them to suck preventing them from falling into a deep, deep sleep.
