posted 19th Nov
took nat in today (she's 11 months) for her 2nd round of DTP. It's the only vaccine we've gotten her so far. I want to start her on another one at her year wellbaby visit.

The vaccine book by Dr. Sears is really helpful ! We chose to do HIB and DtP first. Polio is up to you (well all are up to you   )but as you may know irraticated from the US. Hep B is one you may consider also. Rotata Virus has to be given already so that one is out. I think the next ones you will be looking at are the MMR she could get soon.

i'm thinking we are either going to do HIB or polio next. we will be and know a lot of people who travel outside of the us.

i have the vaccine book it's great!!

I know I love it! Those sound like good choices to me! Do you do them separately or grouped ?

separate.... we started DTP at 9m months. i just got her the 2nd round today at 11 months. i was going to go in on her 10 month and get a diff one started but she had a bad cold so i didn't . i never want to do more than one vax at a time.

at her 12 month appt i'd like to start either HIB or polio. Probably HIB since she needs 4 i think

Yeah that sounds like what we do.We started her with the HIB at 5 months and did her DtP 3 weeks later and then the pnemonia one 2 weeks after that combined with Rotovirus because it was just an oral one. I like to do them one at a time to amke sure she doesn't have a reaction. I'm going to wait a while now before starting any new ones- I have to keep up with the follow up vacc for the other 2

I waited until one year to start vaccines for my son since I was able to stay home andhe was breastfed. We were comfortable delaying things because he had very low exposurerisk (not being in daycare) and the antibodies in the breastmilk protected him.We are followinga slightly modified version of the Dr. Sears alternative schedule. We only do one aluminum containing vaccine at a time. Aluminum isone of the controversial ingredients, so this in theoryspreads out theexposure so your baby canget it out of their system without reaching toxic levels.

We started with DTAP alone, and made sure we got the Sanofi Pasteur brand called "Daptacel." It has 330mcg ofaluminum as opposed to 625mcg in GlaxoSmithKline's "Infanrix." Sanofi Pasteurmakes a loweraluminumDTAP called "Tripedia," but it has mercury which we also wanted to avoid. We rotate the DTAP with HIB and Prevnar. You can do the HIB and Prevnar safely at the same timebecause of the low aluminum levels. Some version of the HIB contain no aluminum (ActHIB & HibTITER) andthe Prevnar contains only 125mcg.

Beware of the combination DTAP/Hep B/Polio vaccines like"Pediarix." While it might sound enticingfor your baby to get stuck once for a total of three vaccines, the aluminum level is equivalent to all three vaccinesfora totalof 875mcg in one dose. You can do a google search for aluminum toxicity in infants if you want to read more about why this isn't good.

If you delay vaccines until six months to one year,Sears says you only need
three (3) DTAP instead of four (4). For HIB and Prevnar, you only need two (2) doses if starting between 12 and 18 months. We are not doing the rotavirus because there have been so many severe problems associated with the first version that came out. Sears states that rotavirus is rarely seen beyond age two, so if your child hasn't gotten it by now, there is a significantly low chance they will especially if they stay home. I still haven't decided aboutPolio. The disease has been eradicated in the US (thanks to vaccines), so unless you are traveling abroad, the risk is really low. Sears states thatthe Polio vaccine doesinclude more chemicals than most, so it is one that I am comfortable delaying a while for now. I don't want to start the"live vaccines" likechicken pox or the MMR until after two years of age.

I hope this is helpful and not info overkill. My husband and I took this really seriously - he is a family physician and admits there is too much controversy out there over vaccine risks. They have done great things - like eradicating polio in the US -but we didn't want to take any chances with our son. Whatever decision you make will be the right decision for your family. Good luck!
