It sounds like you follow your convictions and I think that's a wonderful trait to pass on to your kiddos

thanks! I always get snide remarks about poor Gavin. He doesn't face forward or get ice cream... he is only 20 months!

I'd love to learn more. I always thought I'd spank because I was spanked as a child, but recently my mom told me she wished she'd done it differently and told me I need to read up and find some alternate ways todisciplineother than resorting to a swat on the butt, so here I am!

I HIGHLY recommend the Dr. Sears book (since I know you like his methods already in other areas.) It really deeply resonated with me. Im a Christian mama, so Im surrounded by a lot of people who think spanking is *the* way to go. Its comforting for me to know that Dr. Sears himself is a Christian, who raised 8 children who are all compassionate successful Christians as well and he is a total advocate of gentle discipline and positive redirection over critical methods. The book is a GREAT resource. (Its the first link on the "resources" section on the first post)

and I am aChristianas well, and actually my mom is pretty "hardcore" into all this God stuff and she's been telling me about the problems it can cause children emotionally when you spank them, because they just simply don't understand. I need to find some of the links she gave me and post them here. but I think DR. Sears is pretty right on with all that too.. I'm so glad he's such a big advocate for AP!

Can I join? I am gentle-discipline, although I will spank with an open hand on his clothed bum in a dangerous situation such as DS running out into the street or something. And only after he turns 2. Other than that I won't ever spank.

Can y'all believe that my mom told me to spank him (not even a year old yet) for having a tantrum? Yeah, that'll make him stop crying.

seriously?? I am all about sugar free anything. He has no clue what he is "missing" out on. Sugar is empty and has no nutritional value. What is the point of filling up the child with junk? Not to mention, he gets really bad sugar gut rot like I did as a child. When his lovely grandma gave him ice cream w/o my permission, he was up all night with a belly ache.
He doesn't even really care for sugar. If you give him a cookie, he will give it to the dogs. Give him corn and he shovels it in... I don't think he is missing out.

Hey! I'm Jennifer, I'm 19 and my hubby is 24. My son is 6 months old, and I had always planned to spank, until recently. I have been second guessing that decision a lot lately. I want to be a non-spanking parent, but I think that it will be hard for me. I grew up with multiple forms of "punishment", so it's kind of built into my system. Also, I'm not sure if my hubby will respect my decision or not. I guess we'll talk about it tonight over dinner!
