While feeding the little man this morning I came across something that I thought was rather irritating to me on the news. Before I got any further I just want you to know that I am not a smoker, but I do value my rights to do so if I wish.

Anyway, most health care facilities in the nation are now tobacco free. All forms of tobacco are banned from these facilities. Great idea!!!!Health care providers should be setting an example and not use tobacco around a health care facility. Who really wants to walk through somebody elses smoke when you are trying to get into the hospital.

On the news this morning, they made an announcement about one of the hospitals in the area who is tobacco free. As of the new year they will no longer hire anyone who uses tobacco and during the interview process you will be tested for tobacco use. If any is found, you will NOT be hired!

This really pissed me off and I dont even smoke. I feel they are violating our rights. What somebody does in their own home on their own time

How would they test you? Nicotine doesn't stay in your system that long does it?

Its also legal for 18+ so I don't see the need for testing unless they are minors.

Though if they've been having problems with empployees smoking on hospital grounds, I could see it...kind of.

I have no idea. But they said they would be testing you during your interview process.

They are testing everyone who interviews for a job and if you have tobacco in your system, you will not be hired.

Just looked it up, apparently they test your urine. And can remain in your system for several months.

Nicotine stays in your system for quite some time. Thats how ppl who go to get life insurance get lower prices, be/c they can test you for nicotine to see if your a 'true' non-smoker

They can test for alcoholism legally during a job interview. (in quebec anyways) So im assuming its probably legal to test for nicotine.

I think smoking is a huge waste of money not only to the person smoking but to the state.

I understand the need to test for alcohol, but seriously niccotine??? Its not going to kill somebody else if you smoke too many cigs.... not like a dui will.

Yeah but you can still drink, they can't take that away from you if you are doing it responsibly and not on company time. The same should hold true for smoking.

second hand smoke is more likely to cause cancer then smoking itself. When inhaled by the smoker the particles are still hot and therefor smaller. When smoke is inhaled second hand the particles are bigger and harder to exhale.

Smoking puts you at an increased risk for cardiovasular diseases, which in turn ends up costing the place you work for money. Its most probably about cutting costs. Also its gross when you get a nurse who smells like she just ate an ashtray. Not saying everyone who smokes smells bad, but on a 15 minute break when it takes a few minutes to get outside cigs are mostly smoked really quickly and the smell is nasty imo.

I don't know if it's right of not, but It kinda seems similar to me as schools suspending students because of a picture they posted on their myspace over summer vacation... doesn't seem right but they can and are doing it. A girl I work with got written up for posting on her facebook status about how she was mad that they denied her vacation time.

Its not a good idea to post anything about your work on facebook or myspace. I always leave work out of my personal life at home.

And are you serious? They suspended a girl for a myspace picture from summer vacation? Wow...
