"That's what kids do"

posted 16th Nov
When you were in school were you teased? What were you teased about?

Little stuff? Big stuff?

I have seen kids in school, on the street, in the mall, little kids, big kids, etc tease for ANYTHING.
Scars, dressing different, being poor, being rich, being blonde, being black, Being ANYTHING different.

So...why do you think children do this? Is it upbringing? TV? Peer pressure? And if it's peer pressure....what makes the "peer" like that?
HOW can it be stopped? How are you teaching YOUR child to be accepting of differences in others?

I was made in fun of for beiing white....believe it or not. Made me almost hate white people myself for a while...I grew up saying "I hate white people" or "Ugh mom, you're so WHITE"

It was crazy.

I guess I was the one to turn arond and bully people for the same things I was being bullied for....get in where you fit in kind of mentality.

The world is cruel...and my mom taught me to fight back. Whether is be words or fist....I guess thats what I did. I don't agree with the way I handled being teased, and hopefully I can use that as a learning tool with my kids.

So how are you teaching your kids to be accepting?
Or why do kids tease for these trivial things?

I was teased in high school because i didnt drink and party like everyone else... *shrugs* didn't care either.

I think it has everything to do with upbringing. IMO

I got teased for being dark-skinned, being short, having extra fingers (well, the scars anyway), being smart, and developing early.

I don't know why kids do it, but I know it gets way out of hand. Parents often don't teach their kids tolerance, for whatever reason. I go out of my way to teach mine differently, so if their teachers are telling the truth, mine don't tease others very much.

I was teased...alot.
I was teased about me smiling all the time. I was teased about my big teeth, about the stains on them, I was teased about being skinny, for having red hair, for being tall. I was teased because I read alot.

I have no idea why kids do this, but it saddens me : (
My Lo is not even two yet, so we haven't had to deal with it yet. I hope that if I catch her teasing, that sitting down and talking to her about why people are different, and how it is not nice to tease will help.

As far as to WHY kids do it.

I dont know, they just do. Its somthing to do...its a way to point out the differences in the world. Kids are cruel...

Kids being poor will always be a issue....its hard to not look poor when you're poor....or rich when you are rich.

The way you are raised could effect this...if you are rich and your mom makes sure you wear name brand clothes and what not, of course you will look at the poor kids differently...or vise versa

And this could go on and on....if your parents are racist....9 times outr of 10 the kid will be too.

I was teased for being short in elementary school, then called a slut in high school LOL for NO reason, of course ( I was a virgin)
My daughter is only 17 months but we are going to be sure to instill in her that God makes each person different and that she should be friends with everyone. We are very active in our church and I know that will help her a lot.
My husband was burned, over 70% of his body...3rd degree....the % that wasnt burned was taken for skin graphs, so he is badly scared. I think this will help her not to judge people

I make sure to tell my kids that everyone is beautiful in their own way, that Allah God made us all different because that's the way he likes it, and to tease people for being different is to offend God. And it makes people feel bad, and making people feel bad on purpose makes you a bad person.

Kids learn by example. But Kids also are very truthful. If someone is fat, they point it out, not to be rude, but because they speak the truth.
We don't use the words fat, rich, poor, ugly, or anything that is a negative describing word. (or could possibly be) He learns through us to accept everyone.

So it's ok?
Or are you going to try to change it with your children?

insecurities definitley raise this issue as well...

If a kid is chubby but sees someone that is bigger then them....they might callthat other kidfat, justto put the spot light on them.

In my case, I was not that rich...but I worked hard to wear all name brand clothes...out of fear of being made in fun of....but what did I do in return?? Make in fun of ALL the kids that couldnt wear name brand clothes.

But its not what all kids do. Some surprisingly stick up for people. I took medication when I was in elementary school, so did a few others I knew. My group of friends started teasing this boy that took meds, and I told them, well if you tease him, you might as well tease me too because I take meds as well! They never stopped teasing him, but they stopped teasing about the medication.
