I've got myself a three year old (next week) and potty training has been an uphill battle both ways. Lexi's dad is a soldier and just returned home from deployment. Lexi and I were pretty much there on the potty training before Nick came home. I was using "candy dinosaurs" to get her to go potty as an incentive. When that stopped working I switched to .25 for "potty" and .50 for "number two". That worked pretty well for a few days and then the "shiny" wore off. I've learned now that Lexi is three and while rewarding her for learning something useful and valuable is great the way you do it helps. Lexi is much happier getting just simple high fives, hugs and kisses, and good jobs from Nick and I. Call me crazy but I think you should reward your kids for potty training. They did after all accomplish something they couldn't do previously.

How often did you take your LO to the potty when you first started training them?

I didn't take him...that creates a situation for power struggles where LO says no and tantrums against you. We made it his responsibility by reminding him he needed to go when he felt the pee/poo. With every accident, we reminded him when he felt like that then he needs to run to the potty.

Ryan's only 14 months so we still have a little while before we are seriously going to try to start potty training. Just everything I read said to take them every so often and sit them on the potty

We tried taking my son all the time, but it ended up being a huge power struggle, so I decided to let him take the initiative, and just kept reminding him to go as soon as he felt he needed to and kept an eye on him for accidents. That has worked soooo much better!!!!
I am doing it now with my daughter, and it's been much nicer not having to deal with the power struggle!

eeeeeeeeeeeep

ok. i've been giving my toddler choices lately. this morning I said 'do you want underwear or a diaper?' he picked them both then I told him he could only have one of them and he choice his underwear. he didn't want to pee on the potty yesterday so he kept having accidents and I put him in a diaper. I had to ask him if he wanted to pee like a baby or like a big boy an dhe said baby. i'm so frustrated with the potty training. he's 2.5 and i've been trying to pt him now for so long. he has days where he does really well and then the next day he decides he wants nothing to do with it.

I need some help. he's already in size 6 diapers. I want him to be able to go to preschool this fall. He LOVES school. he cried when it was time to leave from daycare, not wanting to go home. Preschool wont take him unless he's fully PT'd.

I developed a chart system but it hasn't worked out so well yet.
we have a sheet of 100+ gold star stickers that he always wants to play with. so I told him everytime he pees in the potty he can have a gold star on the chart. for every 3 stars he can have 1 piece of candy. If he doesn't have any accidents at all he can have 3 pieces of candy an animal sticker(he really loves stickers).

there are no stars on the chart. just several x's for accidents. i'm about to give up yet again. Am I doing something wrong? I take him and ask him if he has to go every 10-15 min.

Sounds like he's not emotionally ready but is physically ready.

Offering choices is good, but I would suggest making it a choice of "which undies" not "undies or diaper" kwim? And what helped our LO is having him help throw away all diaps in a trash bag to get the kinesthetic and visual cues of "oh smurf...this IS it"

Going naked also helped a lot more than with just undies...I can only assume when they feel something on them they equate that to pee in it since that's what they've done literally their whole lives.

And our LO took until 3 when he was behaviorally/emotionally all onboard.
