15 minutes on each side is how I did it with my son. Then with my daughter, the doc said that one side was fine as long as she wanted. Then just use the other breast for the next feeding.

A lot of people say 10 minutes per side, but my son is a snaker....always has been. My lactation consultant said to just let him feed one one side the whole time and if he still seems hungry than let him go to the other. He always just nursed on one side though!

When my son was little I would feed for half the length of an average feeding. So when he was a newborn and would eat for half an hour at a time, I'd switch after 15 minutes, then flip back to the breast I'd started with if the feeding lasted longer than half an hour. As he got older and his feedings got shorter I'd shorten the time on the first breast.

Now that he's a lot bigger though I switch after the breast is empty; he'll unlatch when it is.

In the first month or so it could sometimes take 45 minutes. Now he can finish in under 15 easy peasy.. we only use one side per feeding.

It also can depend on how much milk your making.. there was no way my little one could empty both breast she nursed on one per feeding the whole time we breastfed (14 months). There were times she wanted more and we would switch to the other but for the most part it was just one side.

I fed on one side for almost an hour. So the next feeding I will feed on the other side. I thought once the milk came in you fed on one breast & then the next feeding the other breast?

Yes, but it depends on if they are satisfied. If you feed on one side and it has nothing left and they are still hungry then, obviously go to the other side. But if they are satisfied use the other breast the next time. You will be a little lopsided at first

I feed on one side until it's empty because if I take him off after 10 or 15 minutes and try to switch over to the other side he falls asleep.

every time I breastfeed my daughter falls asleep like 5 minutes into feeding. This may be a stupid question how do you know if the breast is empty?

How old is she? Many newborns get tired out eating and often pass out. You can try keeping her awake by tickling her feet or ears or keeping a wet cloth nearby to wipe her down with to ensure she's eating until she's full.
