huge problem...

posted 10th Nov
I need help figuring out what to do..or opinions or something.

I am scared...I got my 2nd blood screening back and i failed it. which means the baby COULD have down syndrome i am 1/55 and 2% of it having it compared to 98% of it not having it.

I have 2 options.
1. Ultrasound to detect if it has any defects..and even that can come back normal.
2. The amnio. which i am scared of the most.

I am not sure what to do. :[

go for the ultrasound first, then if absolutely necessary go for the amnio.
Good luck!

Does it matter? You will love your child anyways. I wouldn;t do the amnio, go for the ultrasound if you feel the need to.

I've been there. I had both the u/s and the amnio.

Ignore those who say "you'll love the baby no matter what"... while that is the truth, sometimes you just NEED to know in order to prepare.

both my hubby & i tested positive for the CF gene.
They asked us if we wanted to do the whole testing the baby before he was born crap, and i said no. I'm not for indangering my child. You can do it when he's born. Either way it wouldn't change that we were going to love him and be his parents.
If i were you and you were that worried about it, just get the ultrasounds done. When the baby is born they can do the tests then.

The statistics on the dangers of amnios are all based on tests conducted in the late 70s and 80s and they were conducted by regular OBs rather than the highly trained specialists who do them now. There's still a risk and it's still scary but I think that with the better equipment and the well trained staff I'd be willing to take the risk with the amnio. I haven't need to myself but my SIL has had 2 because she is a carrier for a genetic disorder.

Having said the above, those blood tests are notoriously wrong and I'd get the level 2 u/s before an amnio and only do the amnio if the u/s still indicated potential problems. I would never terminate but I do like to know what I'm in for in advance.

well..I was going to do the ultrasound cause I am going to get an ultrasound anyways..and I thought maybe that I could wait to get the amnio but I noticed you can't get it after 20 weeks or can you? I really just want to wait on it. either way yes...i will love my child..and would never abort her. Its just the fact I want to know if she really does..cause it could be where she has the trisomy with the extra chromosome and I would lose her anyways.. :[ I mean I am not looking to losing her...at all...I mean I cried once I found out..its just a scary thing.

My mom had a false positive with her daughter. they said she has trisomy 18...and that she wasn't going to live. my mom got the amnio and come to find out my little sister was perfectly fine.

its just scary of the risk of miscarriages.

I would get an Amnio so you are 100% sure. I don't trust the U/S because they go basically of looking at certain things, like the umbilical cord and neck thickness and it's not 100% accurate. If you really want to know I'd just get the amnio.

My mom's co-worker is 45 and they told her she was high risk for Downs based on her blood tests and her Amnio came back normal, negative for Downs. Good luck and I hope everything is ok.

My SIL's genetic counselor told her that they like to do the test around 20 weeks mainly because they want to make sure there's still time if you were going to terminate not because they can't do it later.

I do not want to terminate either way.

I say go for the ultrasound first and if necessary do the amnio. It will help you plan and research the situation so your not walking into it blind. Go with your heart and good luck mama! Don't worry too much Doctors will scare you these days with all that could go wrong. They scared me too.
