Baby Talk

posted 7th Nov
Hi!! Post whore here tonight but I'm bored and BG is slow.

Did you baby talk to your children and if so....do you think their speech was affected because of it?

I didn't baby talk (or allow anyone else to) w/ my first child and I catch myself doing it all the time to my new baby. (IDK why....I'm trying to break my new little habit.)

I'm a believer, although I have no proof, lol that speaking to them in a "whiney" voice w/ made up words affects how children learn to speak. (Ex: Does my babbbbbby wannnaaaa bobbbbble?)

My first child spoke early and clearly. People were always telling me how well he communicated his thoughts and spoke in sentences.

Curious & bored....your thoughts please!!

We purposely didn't speak to him like a baby. He's on track with verbal development at 15 months and occasionally he will pick a random word and repeat it perfectly. I will sit and talk to him all day like he's my best grown up friend.

My daughter is 7 months, she doesn't talk yet. But I do not speak like a baby to her. I don't let anyone else talk to her like a baby either.

I did/ do with both my girls. My daughter is nearly 3 now, and everyone is always saying how well she speaks. Even our child health nurse is impressed. I only did it when she was a little baby tho, by the time she was 1 i was pretty much talking normal. But she is fine... but idk... it could effect them i guess... i'll see how my youngest turns out...

I did the same w/ Jarod. I do credit his speaking to the fact that we spoke to him like an adult.

It's so hard for me to not baby talk my newborn!! I just want to be all up in his face loving on him all the time and I find myself baby talking to him. I was thinking to myself...."Well, I guess my theory will be tested. We'll see how he turns out." lol

It's probably because my husband says no more babies and I'm trying to savor every moment of him.

I used to stop people (even strangers) mid sentence who were baby talking Jarod and say "Don't speak to my child like that!" I got a lot of dirty looks. lol

I used baby talk with all of my kids. My 2 year old son can speak in clear, complete sentences. I honestly don't think it affected them in a negative way.

Ehhh I just speak to Ethan like he's a person, though I slip sometimes and do baby talk. But for the most part it's just normal day to day speaking.
