How could you not know what these mean?? lol

posted 7th Nov
At work today, a girl who was a Physical therapy aide, came to work with the patient whos home i was in. She needed someone to sign that she was there so i did and then we were just talking, i was filling out paper work at the time, in she seen at the top of my page in my chart where it said if my patient was a DNR or if they werent. She asked me what it ment, so i thought maybe some in physical therapy just might not know, but then i seen she was from a nursing home, so i just went on about my business, and so did she then she asked me if the patient needed help going to the restroom and things like that. i told her to just look at her file, b/c i was fixing supper, she asked me what PRN ment. I mean is this girl serious to not know what those things mean and be in the medical feild? lol. I guess i can understand the DNR but to be in PT and not understand PRN when physical therapist are usually who help decide if the person should be PRN or not. lol. No point to this really other then to share how shocked i was, sort of wondering about that chick lol. And b/c im bored and can't sleep!!!

I have a similar issue... there's a phlebotomist at my job that can NOT draw blood for the life of him. This AM at work he's breathing his nasty onion breath all over me telling me this 92 year old woman has no veins-- duh shit, I'm trying to put an IV in her. So he said he can't do it, and I need to call the supervisor. WTF is the supervisor going to do? If you can't draw blood, you're in the wrong profession, buddy.

LOL. Some people just don't get the training they need, which is sad because the patients suffer. It just shows you what a need there is for CNAs and just anyone in the health care field. One time the aide corridnator hired this guy, he came his first day of work asked what he needed to do, I asked if he could do take out someones teeth and clean them....he looked at me so shocked. lol poor guy

it's surprising how stupid some people can be!!
I'm a home health aide and I had an LPN ask me how to use a stethoscope to check blood pressure!!! (she was a newly certified LPN and had only used the wrist monitors!) I was in complete shock. I couldn't even laugh. And these are the people we are trusting to care for our loved ones. Sheesh.

And he's just nasty... I'm telling you, when I deliver this baby, he better not come near me to draw my blood. I will flat out refuse.

That's really scary. We had to pass competencies in school proving that we could take a manual blood pressure. I wasn't an LPN ever, but I'm sure they're supposed to do the same thing. Wow.

DNR means Do Not Resuscitate and PRN meansAs needed. So if the patients house i was at today is a PRN for taking baths, or getting dressed it means not to help her unless either i can see her struggling or she asks me to help. I can understand someone who dont work in the medical feild somewhere to understand but to be a PT aide and not understand the PRN is just wat shocks me lol.

I can 'kind of' understand a conflict in PRN.
I have heard several different defintions wroking in the CNA field. But mostly it has been used as 'as needed' for me.

Well as far as I know PRN is "as needed and ", DNR is "do not resuscitate".. DNR is a good one to know if you're trained in CPR... There is such a high turnover with techs, they typically do not train them well at all.
