Baby Gate

posted 7th Nov
So I have a 2 1/2 year old and he thinks he is IN CHARGE....KING OF THE HOUSE and all that jazzz....well, he is TERRIBLE about going to bed at night, he runs out of his room at least 20-30 times a night before finally going to sleep, then in the morning is up at the crack of dawn and waking up his newborn brother. So I installed one of those metal baby gates on his doorframe and he about lost his mind, went on strike and threw toys, kicked walls, screamed bloody murder and took his pjs off and is now sleeping naked in bed....*i turned up my heater so he wont freeze * But i was just curious if anyone else has a child like this and has had to do this to them....i feel bad cuz i want him to understand that bedtime is bedtime but he just WONT, and i feel like the bad guy....its better than what people have told me which is lock him in his room, which i will NOT do for security reason but IS IT MEAN to put a gate up and listen to him scream?

idk, I can't really say what I'd do but I think that as long as he can see you and hear you the gate is fine. Maybe try sitting in there with him with the gate up for awhile till hes out. Hopfully after a while you can take the gate down.

I have a friend that has a 3 years old and he gets up really early sometimes and will wonder around the house or will get into the frige and stuff at night so they put a child safety lock on the door handle on the inside of the door. Thats bad! They're too lazy to get up with him if he gets up at 5am so they pritty much lock him in his room till they get up.

I'm not eather but thats not cool. She's asked me about it before, like what else she could do, and I told her to use a gate instead (like the OP) if you have to and that it was wrong to lock your toddler in his room but she just ignored me  .

hmm what kind of bedtime routine do you have? With my son I put his PJs on and change his diaper, kiss him good night, tuck him in and read a story then I turn off the light and shut the door. Evertime I hear him out of bed (he doesnt do it much anymore) I go in put him in bed, give him a kiss and leave. After I know he is asleep I open the door back up for the rest of the night.

how wonderful that would be if it could be as simple has just placing him back in bed......its literally a WAR at nighttime, he throws his body in all directions when we try to *place* him back in bed!!! Kid weighs 36 lbs. there is only so many times i can haul his butt back to bed before I am at my breaking point! he has a routine, always has since 2 mths old....bathtime, pjs, lotions and backrub, storytime with mommy or daddy (whichever is not with the baby) and then kisses and we leave his light on for 10 mins so he can read his books that he wants and then its lights out! was great for a while but its just SOOOOOOO hard keeping him in bed anymore.

maybe a longer nap during the day or two naps to get him to stay up till 9ish something so he'll sleep in after dawn at least?

sorry i'm not a big help..i tried

Liv gets mad if we're on the otherside of the gate. Right now it's just to keep her in the living room, we're working on getting the rest of the house baby proofed, especially now that she's walking the living room isn't cutting it anymore.

My nephews had gates up so they couldn't get out in the middle of the night, I don't think it's wrong. Liv will probably have one on her door too. Not only is it keeping them in, but it's a safety procaution so in the middle of the ngith they don't wander out and get out of the house or into something bad.

We put a gate on my daughter's room at night. She did the same thing your son did for the first few days. She will everynow and then toss her toys out of her room or take her pjs off. I go in after she is sleeping and cover her up with a blanket and push her toys to one wall in the living room so if walking in the dark we dont trip over them. Now she knows the gate is bed time (or timeout but she knows when its bed time) and plays with her toys then climbs in bed to fall asleep but like I said everynow and then she will toss her toys out of her room but for the most part she is good. It took about a week of fits to get her this way.

he will get the hang of it. Lilly would throw huge fits at bed time. It took her about a week to get over it. She wouldnt stay in her room if her life depended on it before we put the gate up. We sat with her till she fell asleep when we moved. that was a bad idea because she wanted me to do it every night. which i cant do when tim is working nights because im usually feeding zoey about that time.
