Green poo?

posted 7th Nov
My month old daughter just had a bowel movement that was green....she is only breastfed. Is that bad? She has been crying for 3 hours on and off and she has been sweating (but maybe that was from her being held on my chest, idk).

It's a foremilk hindmilk inbalance. Essentially she isn't getting enough of the hindmilk. How often are you switching breasts?

Sounds like a hindmilk/foremilk imbalance.
Green poo is also signs of food allergy, for future reference

It can be a sign of a fore/hind milk imbalance, but, if it's just been once, seriously don't worry about it. My daughter was off and on green because I had a bit of an over supply. I talked to the doctor and he wasn't worried.

If she's not feeling well, she may be eating less, therefore getting more foremilk. You may try feeding the same breast for 3 hours and then switching (called block feeding) to try and get more hindmilk.

I usually dont switch breasts during a feeding, but I did when I was feeding her right before I changed her diaper because she was getting really frustrated with my left breast and wouldn't stay latched on so I tried my right one. Also, I had cut dairy completely out of my diet to try to help her tummy (it didn't help) and I had one bowl of cereal today.....could that be why???

Why would she be sweating? I'm worried bc this is the longest she has ever cried and I know she is exhausted.

Or it could just mean you ate a lot of salad

For DD, it was a hindmilk/foremilk thing. I made too much milk so she was getting too much of the watery low-fat stuff so she was always hungry and it created the green poo problem. Also I had overactive let down so that made her gassy as well.

For the green poo- block feedings. Feed off the same breast 2-3 times and only then switch sides. It will help to regulate your milk supply and eliminate the green & gassy problems!

Wow, I didn't know all this. Hopefully that will help because she has AWFUL gas problems to where she screams in pain from it   I am about to go f-ing crazy cause I couldn't figure out what was wrong with her just now.

It takes a few weeks for dairy to leave your system, also there is dairy in a LOT of things, so it may not have done much for her.

She might be a little hot though, try stripping her down to her dipe.

She's sweating? Have you taken her temp? Tried gas drops.. she may be gassy.

My daughter sweats when she's tired (odd, I know) - sweaty head means bedtime. But, yes, temp her...if she's pretty wound up she could be sweating from that too though.

You try gas drops, tummy rub, circling the legs?

My daughter was the fart queen too. We had 2 hour scream-a-thons like every couple months...baby can sense your frustration...I used to just have to sit down and rock her REALLY fast in the rocker and sing.

You could try the 5 S's - shush (loudy in ear so they can hear over their own screaming - think hairdryer sound), swing, swaddle, suck and side laying. The shushing and side laying usually worked for us...but she also loved the swing going at a pretty good clip.

Hope it gets better mama.

I can't take credit. They're from the Happiest Baby On The Block. Good book/video if you're interested.

Maybe she had a gas bubble that made her cry, which makes them breathe funny (like big gulping breaths) which in turn makes them even more gassy. My baby still gets really sweaty if she cries very much, crying is a lot of effort! So the sweat could just be from getting worked up.

For intolerances, it takes usually about 8-12 hours for something you eat to make it into your breastmilk. So if you'd cut out dairy and then had some this morning then you're in the right time frame for a reaction.

Some babies react differently to different forms of dairy. My sister (even as a breastfed baby) had horrible reactions to milk and yogurt, but really fatty cheeses never affected her. She's the same today- the fattier the food, the better her body handles it.
