Big baby boy- will they hold off?

posted 7th Nov
Okay, I just need to vent for a moment. My husband and I have been expecting our first child, our sweet baby Caleb, and according to the doctor's first transvaginal scan he would be due the 29th of November. Well, after dealing with gestational diabetes via diet and a pill at night we just found out yesterday that he's weighing in at 9 lbs 5 oz already! I swear I almost fell off the table when the ultrasound tech gave me the news. My next appointment with my doctor isn't until this coming Thursday and he'll be receiving the ultrasound information right when he comes in Monday morning. My question is- do you think they'll wait or will I be induced? I really, really do not want a c-section unless absolutely necessary but if they let me go full term, another 3 weeks, I have no idea what Caleb's size is going to be! My doctor had been pleased with my blood sugar numbers and I just did not anticipate this. Anyone experience anything similar? With my baby that size (and the tech said he could be a half pound more or less for error) will they hold off?

My doctor would not induce for a large baby! I had a 10lb 10oz baby vaginally! They didn't believe me he was giant, they wouldn't induce me anyway. The ultrasounds are off a lot of times so don't get to scared!

I think it just depends on you Dr. but I think they MIGHT just induce you for risk of c-section if they let you go.

My friend delivered a boy a couple weeks ago, and he was almost 10 lbs! She begged to be induced early, but they even let her go overdue

don't panic yet! lol. the ultrasound can be off by up to 20% - hopefully less rather than more than what they told you.

i had to go to the specialists for ultrasounds. they said mine was 8 pounds 4 ounces at 36 weeks - the next day she was born at 6 pounds 9 ounces.

I'm not sure mama....but I wanted to say, in my experience, having a U/S at this stage isnt very accurate.

I was 41 weeks and I had another U/S done (I was borderline having GD, my levels were on the really high end) and they did all the measurements and they said that she most likely wouldnt be over 8lbs, that they would be surprised if she was over 8.

4 days later she was born, 10lbs, 2 oz!

ETA: I was in labor for 18 hours, I had to end up having a c-section because she wouldnt fit and she got stuck.

u/s can be off by up to 2lbs either way. i have type 2 diabetes and was completely in control of it throughout my second pregnancy and my son was 3 weeks early and weighed 10lbs 4.2oz, he was a repeat c-section. but it also shows you that no matter how well you take care of your diabetes be it gestational or not, you still run a risk for a big baby. also a side note, i didn't have any form of diabetes with my oldest and he weighed 9lbs 3oz and was a week early.

Also being induced increases your chances of having a c-section and the ultrasound can be way off. They said Connor was going to be 8 pounds and he was only 6 pounds!

Lol, I would hope they would know considering we're supposed to have all that glucose testing done by our doctors!

Thanks for responding everyone- I guess it's just all up in the air. I do have a very proactive doctor and the ultrasound lady told my mom that he is always erring on the side of caution so induction may be completely possible. Who knows, right? I know God's got this, but wheew- trying to imagine a watermelon coming out of a lemon, hehe!

Being this is your first i would not get induces unless it is totally medicallynecessary. C-section rates sore with inductions. This being your first labor it will take longer and you don't need anythingaggravatingand stressing the baby out. Pitocin will give you stronger contractionsearlierwhich in turn can stress baby out. If you get section now due to a lot of hospital procedures your next children will be c-sections which gives a lower instance of successful breastfeeding and losing the baby weight! Just something to think about

wow i didn't know that c-sections cause a lower breastfeeding sucess rate!? both my boys were breastfed, my oldest until he was almost 2 and my youngest is 9mths and still breastfed, also i wasn't able to nurse my youngest for a week, as he was in the NICU for too much fluid on his lungs and a heart murmur.

we must have been lucky, I had to have a c-section but I was able to breastfeed. Thankfully, hopefully this baby will too!

i've done it successfully twice! so i'm sure you'll be fine, even my grandmother, who had my dad and uncle back in 1945 and 1946 had to have c-sections and was able to nurse both of them sucessfully
