my cousin's on a ventilator

posted 7th Nov
darn h1n1   ... my mom called earlier this eveningto let me know that my 43 year old cousin (on my mom's side) has been hospitalized and is in the ICU on a ventilator   ... appearently he's been sick for a month .. going to the dr .. being told to go home and rest and drink lots of fluids ... finally yesterday his fingernails were turning blue .. when they tested his oxygen levels they were in the 70s (should be in the 90s i think) ... so anyways... we're all thinking about him ...

she also informed me that my younger cousin (11 years old - on my dad's side) has been sick with a high fever, diarrhea and vomiting all week .. his mom has had him to the dr, been treating him with tylenol and the fever just won't break .. she had to bring him to the ER this morning b/c he couldn't breath ... when they listened to his chest they thought he must be asthmatic .. he's not. .. so they did x-rays and there are some spots on his lungs ... they're thinking complications from h1n1 .. possibly pnemonia ...

**sigh** don't let anybody tell you this isn't serious shit. vaccinate. don't vaccinate. whatever works for you ... but don't think this is just a walk in the park and it can be brushed off ...neither of my cousins had underlying conditions ... perfectly healthy people ...

Wow, I'm sorry! I hope they both get better quick!

This h1n1 is tricky stuff. Some people are just being hit harder than others. We all had it, and it was so mild. The only complications is my daughter needed nebulizer treatments for a few days.

But a man my MIL works with had a 104 fever for 5 days and was so weak he could hardly move.

It's crazy how differently people react to it, no matter how healthy.

that's what's so scary .. the unknown of it!! i've never had a seasonal flu vaccine b/c i can usually fight off infections fairly well .. but this crap ... it seems to strike some people sooo hard ... and others it barely slows them down ... how am i to know which group i'll fall into?!?! if i thought i'd be in the "mild" group .. hell nah keep that vaccine away please .. but i did get vaccinated b/c i am in a high rish group and my LO is in a high risk group and can't get vaccinated b/c she's allergic to eggs (the "non-eggy" one isn't availble yet in canada .. it hasn't been approved here yet   ) ... one of my friends is working in a major hospital caring for people with h1n1 ... she said when it's bad ... IT'S BAD ... i hope that most people who get this flu only get the mild version like yourselves!!

So sorry this is happening to your family. I learned something interesting about the flu in general. A third of all people carry staph naturally on there skin. Most of the deaths of people that didn't have underlying conditions had this staph. They are in my prayers!
