Dog Lovers Help!

posted 7th Nov
We've only ever had cats   . We want to get a chocolate lab or a blood hound.

My questions are:
Can they sleep outside?
Do they like being in kennels/crates?
If they sleep inside do they have to go out at night to pee?

TIA!

They can sleep outside, but I personally think it's mean...
No they don't generally like being in a crate...
Once they are fully house broken they can hold it throughout the night.. just let them out before you go to sleep and as soon as you get up..

They can sleep outside. you can crate train them. They might need to go outside to pee during the night.

I don't have either of those breeds, had a lab when I was younger and she was completely outside dog. Labs are made for the outdoors, blood hounds I have no clue. I have a terrier mix right now she is crate trained and house broken. She stays in her crate all night and I take her outside in the morning.

If you crate train your dog from a puppy, they will like to sleep in their crate.
You put the dog out before you put them in the crate and you crate them when you leave the house (if you arent going to be gone to long) it makes them feel safe. But you have to do it from the time they are puppies.

They can if they have to. You can get any dog to love their kennel. You will have to crate train them, they wont automatically LOVE it. A bench mark for holding in pee is an hour plus 1 for every month they are. 8 week old puppy can hold it in for 3 hours, 3 month old for 4, etc. Once they're older I wouldn't recommend making them hold it for longer than 8 hours.

I wouldn't want her to sleep outside, but for a short time it may be necessary.

I wouldn't want to put her in a crate or anything either, but the lady I talked to from the shelter today talked about them like it was standard to crate them on a regular basis so I was just wondering..

Thanks!

Well, any dog really can go outside.

As long as there is something to keep the rain off of them(like a covered porch or something) and food and water for them to drink, they are usually fine.

If you keep a dog in the house, frequent walks can keep them from using the bathroom in the house(or I guess putting them in the back yard). If you take them out just before bed they probably wont pee or poo in the house. But if they are potty trained its even better

I'm not trying to sound like a biatch, but I don't really think it's fair to have a dog if you are going to make them sleep outside or crate them. I mean, if they are going to be a part of your family and you "love" them then you should treat them like it. again, I'm not trying to be mean I'm just saying.

As for crate training. The crate is their home, their den, their comfort zone. They must always feel safe. It is NOT a place to put the dog for punishment. Feed them in their crate, give them treats in their crate, etc. That's "their" spot that no one else can bother them.

im actually on mat leave from working at a dog daycare/training.... i dont know much about bloodhounds, but from my experiences, do LOTS of research before getting a lab.... ie research the breeder and their previous litters.... all the labs we had were horribly trained and had NO impulse control what so ever.... they take A ;LOT of patience and training... it depends how you train the dog, to answer all your questions... but when they are young, yes they will have to go out at to pee, eventually they shouldnt have to... i personally don't believe on leaving your dog outside overnight, sooo again you have to TRAIN the dog to like being in a kennel... i highly advice taking puppy classes.... any other questions, pm me

My dog actually prefers her crate, she goes in it to lay down even if I don't make her. It's her quiet baby free zone lol.

Crate training is something any dog lover should do. It keeps the dog from getting into plants, food, etc that's dangerous for them when you cannot supervise. I think it's not fair to have a dog if you're not going to crate train them.
