Got Complimented Behind My Back And I'm Mad!

posted 7th Nov
I know that sounds dumb, but hearme out.

I have been working at the same place for over 6 years now (was 6 years on 10/19/09). When I started working here, I just started filing part-time for $10/hour (I was still in high school). Since then, I have gotten a $3 raise (that I had to FIGHT FOR and actually quit to get like 3 years ago), and I have learned every single job here... from changing oil and brake jobs to posting deals and selling cars... and everything in between... literally I've learned it all. I am very flexible and come in whenever called. I work EVERY SATURDAY open to close (8am-6:30pm) and every OTHER Sunday open to close (only because the girl who used to work EVERY Sunday won't give up her every other because it's time and a half). I have NEVER called in in the 6 years I've been here, EVER. 3 years ago I was working (literally) over 60 hours a week, 6-7 days a week (making decent money obviously). I got pregnant 2 1/2 years ago with my son, and still continued working 40 hours a week (only because they cut out ALL overtime for EVERY employee) and got a second 40 hour night job to make up for the money I was missing from getting my hours cut). My entire pregnancy I never called in a single day I was scheduled to work. I went out on maternity leave on February 13th, and had my son 11 days later. 13 weeks later (due to some medical complications I was out longer than the 8 weeks, which they knew ahead of time was going to happen)I came back to work 25 hours a week (the only hours they would give me) and didn't complain because at least it was a job. I brought home like $300-ish a week and that was decent enough for me to survive on with SO's income. About 6 months ago my hours got cut down to 20, and I still didn't complain. It was still $250 and my SO still had a decent job and we were getting by. We used my whole paycheck for all the bills and rent, and SO's went in the bank and we saved it. SO got laid off, but was still getting unemployment, so we were okay... but I did pick up a second Dunkies job. Long story short... I got some hours back, and got back up to 36 hours! Over the past 3 weeks, my hours have recently got cut from 36 hours to 10. TEN HOURS! I asked why, and I wasn't given a reason. I'm never late, always here, always come in when they call.

You get the picture... now, with that background... I got a compliment behind my back the other day, and I'm so pissed about it.

A girl I work with (she's a finance manager, but she's young and we talk a lot and get along well) comes up to me and asks if I could use some extra hours next week and I said absolutely, and she asked if I could come in and help her with a project. Now, there are a TON of other people here during the week that have nothing to do and could help her, so I told her I'd love to, but why me... she has someone in the building Monday through Friday DESIGNATED to help her with this stuff, and she said that she went to our GM and ASKED if she could get me to do it because I'm better at doing it and will do it twice as fast and more organized than anyone else here! The GM agreed and said I could absolutely do it (Thank God, because we need the money!). But seriously, WTF! If I'm that good, then why can't I have more hours, and why does the girl that get paid MORE THAN ME that is a COMPLETE IDIOT get normal, Monday thru Friday hours, 40 hours a week!? Seriously. It made me mad... and I know I should appreciate the fact that she REQUESTED me over everyone else, but still, it's like WTF!

I would have a little talk with the main person there. That is very wrong. They need to either give you a raise for your hoursbeing cut, or they need to make it a normal amount of hours. Can you become a manager or something?

I would be completely pissed too.

The only management positions there are are Service (and the Service manager is my father, but that's not how I got the job here, and he's been here for 30 years total), the General Manager (which will never happen), Sales managers (who, even though this is illegal, this company would never hire a female for the position, nor is one open), Finance Managers (and I don't have a degree so that's a no), and the Office Manager (who is from corporate, not picked by anyone here, but by the Owner himself, and he owns 47 dealerships and isn't interested in listening to individual employees of his dealerships, nevermind a 24 year old   ).

They always pass over me for the full-time positions I can do... they say "oh, we didn't even think to ask you... that was stupid!". A full-time position hasn't come up in over a year, but seriously, the no hours is absolutely ridiculous... I've been trying to find another job somewhere, but no luck. I just don't understand if I'm "so good" why they do this crap to me.

I'm sorry to hear that, It would be hard to survive on 10 hours. Can you look for another part-time job. Or look for a different full-time job that has 40 hours?

Wow, that sounds like a pretty crappy situation. Your dad can't help you out at all? I really hope things get better for you! I would look for a new job if I were you!

I have been... there's NOTHING out there! I just got a part-time job at Toys R Us because that's all I could find, and it's just seasonal and it's only 8 hours a week right now, and 4.50 an hour less than mycurrent job.   BUT it's something, and the discount will help me through Christmas and my son's birthday.
