breast milk.

posted 7th Nov
I was just wondering how long it takes for your milk to dry up if you're not breast feeding. it's been 3 weeks since my LO was born, and I only breastfed the first two days because she wouldn't latch on well and got PISSED but now I really want to try breastfeeding again, because I hate giving her formula. my milk is still coming out when I squeeze my nipples, and I figured it would of dried up by now. I tried to pump yesterday and I only got like, the bottom of the bottle in 10 minutes. and it hurt, too.

If you can get milk out, it shouldnt be a problem at all to bf. Just latch her on anytime shes hungry and pump whenever you can.
She might eat awhile since your not producing as much milk as if she was bfing the past three weeks

I tried to breastfeed her yesterday. I actually got to her before she completely woke up & started crying for food and she took it but only sucked for like, 3 seconds before she fell asleep then she took it out of her mouth. before, like in the hospital she would latch on after FOREVER of trying to get her to, then she wouldn't feed but a few seconds before falling asleep, or she would get pissed because she couldn't get a latch on the nipple and she'd just scream & we could never get her latched on. I was thinking of buying some of those nipple sheilds, but I thought maybe it'd be too late cause I figured it'd be drying up by now.

Im in the same boat! Its been 2 months but I can still get some out and am trying to get him to latch lately before giving him his bottle to get my supply going again. How long do you try to keep her latched on for?

Pumping is no indication whatsoever of how much you have. And you can start pumping every 2 hours--day and night--in order to see results. If you can get her to latch on, then the best way to up your supply is to put her to the breast. I doubt that she will latch on easily though, since at the breast, she has to work for her food ( so to speak). Can you get in touch with a La Leche Leader in your area? They come to your house, free of charge, and are very knowledgeable and supportive.
Good luck!

I just leave her until she comes off and gets mad, which is like all of a minute. I guess she's mad because it's not coming out like a bottle and she doesn't want it, which makes me sad because I really want to breastfeed. it was my plan from the beginning.

i used the nipple shield with my son for the first 4 months. he started pulling it off when he was done using them. try drinking mothers milk tea, or taking fenugreek. your doctor may also be able to prescribe you something called reglan. i had to quit BFing for a week and a half b/c i was on antibiotics, and my supply was almost gone like yours. i took the reglan and it came back with a vengance. he'llbe a year old on tuesday and we're still breastfeeding. good luck!

I had the same exact problem with Esmee ! I've been pumping after feeding her & getting her to latch on. I still haven't dried up, so I'm hoping I can start up again. She gets so pissed too cause it doesn't come out fast.

yeah, I know, and I don't like to hear her scream so I just give her formula. and I regret that decision everyday, but she wasn't eating when I was trying to breastfeed her and she was always hungry. formula fills her up & she doesn't get upset. but I want to breast feed so badly.

I felt the same way. So now I'm trying again. What I do is give her an ounce or two or formula first. So that she doesn't freak out as much since she is half full. She latches on better, but eventually does pull away crying again. So I just let her keep relatching even for a few seconds.

One good method a friend told me an LC told her is-- to pump for ten minutes on, then ten minutes rest, then ten minutes on. For a whole hour, do that a few times a day & night.

well I tried pumping yesterday and it hurt so bad, and my nipple was like pink and burning. I probably wasn't doing it right, but it hurt like hell. it's a lousy ass manual pump the hospital gave me, lol. I wanted to give her some breastmilk so I was gonna pump but after ten minutes and I didn't even get but the very bottom of the bottle, I just gave up.

Buy Lansinoh Lanolin cream for your nipples. That stuff works wonders. And remember it only hurts the first few days, it's something your nipples are not used to. Good luck!
