Yeah, the 2nd amendment doesn't really give us the right to bear arms - since a right it something inherent, not something the government grants you.

But I kind of think they're reading too much into it.

I've actually heard a theory running around that gun owners are going to be getting "punished" under the new healthcare bill. It's not in the bill, it is more of a "could happen" type of thing. Anyone who is on the public option may have their rates/services adjusted based on compliance with "healthy" behavior. There is already a clause about vaccinating/non-vaccinating. So, technically, owning a gun is a risky behavior because there could be an accident, so while it seems far-fetched, the powers that be could heavily tax or even remove coverage from gun owners until they comply and give up their risky weapons.

Now, is there anything remotely alluding to this in the current bills? No.

DoI think someone as radical as Pelosi or Obama could dream up such a clause, "for the safety of their constituents and in the name of lowering costs for everyone"? Yes.

Ha, just slightly.

Infowars...yeah...

They posted the same things about George W. as they do about Obama.

erm, is there any factual information on these theories of punishing gun owners on the healthcare bill or Obama's "New Bill of Rights?" A link, perhaps, to where he supposedly posted it to the white house website?

Sounds like a bunch of loaded language and paranoia to me.

I understand Obama was big on gun control when he was back in Illinois, but gun laws on a federal level are a whole other ball game.

Not trying to diss on anyone's opinions... just rationalizing.

No, that's why I called it a theory.

It would be quite easy for them to impose something like that though, wouldn't it? I'm not saying that's the plan, I'm just saying it is a far fetched possibility. The healthcare bill is anything but constitutional, so we know that the constitutionality of such issues, is not to be viewed as a roadblock by the current democrats in power.

I'm still not sure I understand how it is unconstitutional, or how it would have passed if it was.
Maybe I'll be proven wrong when the Supreme Court decides to overrule it... only time will tell.

mandating people buy something, and imposing fines if they don't is unconstitutional. What clause in the constitution says it is okay?

We both know that constitutional interpretation will be shaded by liberal or conservative views, so you and I could probably both make good arguments as to why it is or why it isn't.
That makes the idea that whether or not the SC decides if it is or isn't, not the best litmus test, since their decisions are also clouded with their own biases.

Everyone needs health insurance anyway... that's not a government mandate, that's a common sense mandate.
just for the record... what clause in the constitution says its not ok?

There is a huge difference between collecting taxes and forcing people to purchase a 3rd party product.

...so wait... this isn't a government run health care system we're talking about then? well shit... what on earth are you guys complaining about? being told you HAVE to have health insurance? isn't that better than being told you can't have health insurance?

You're not required to purchase into the new health exchange, it's an option. You're more than welcome to keep your private insurance if you have it Just as long as you have SOME health insurance.

Collecting taxes is one thing, mandating the purchase of a product is another. Can you tell me of anything else that we are forced to buy at this time?

Yeah, I do have a problem with the government telling me I HAVE to buy anything, no matter how good of an idea you think it is.

I find it laughable and a little embarrassing that people think this (deficit neutral) government health insurance plan will bring down costs by fostering a little extra competition. Makes you wonder what the thousands of private health insurance companies are doing...
