Do I take my 5 month old to ER?

posted 6th Nov
I had a head cold, I gave it to him. He woke up screaming, he can't breathe through his nose. I've tried little noses, the aspirator is barely even working. I gave him tylenol earlier just in case.

His dr. doesn't have a 24 hour line. Do I take him in? I called the ER and they can't tell you anything like that. So I'm asking you ladies. First time parent over hear, so i might just be over reacting.

No fever. just his nose stuffed up and the stuffyness isn't moving anywhere.

then the er won't do anything. take him into the bathroom and turn on the shower. as hot as you can get it and sit on the toilet with him and let the steam do its magic

I'd say try keeping him in the sitting position to see if you can drain his nose a little and make him more comfortable. If that doesnt work that it may just be better to take him in, better safe than sorry.

I wouldn't go to the ER unless he had a high fever that tylenol wasn't bringing down.
You could turn the shower on as hot it will go and let him breathe in the steam for awhile and vicks baby rub worked well for my son.

I agree with the other mommas, but just wanted to add that the ER is pretty dangerous in terms of exposing your LO to even more germs and illnesses. I had to go in with my brother (he got hurt playing football) and it was packed with really sick people.

Definitely steam shower, vaporizer if you have one, baby vapor rub if you feel comfortable using it, saline drops.. if you don't have any you can make some boil water and a little salt. (i forget the exact recipe) I would advise against the ER b/c if it's just a head cold you don't want to expose him to all the sick kids in there w/ the H1N1 and such. GOod luck mama!

Thank you for the advice ladies! He is lying back down right now, and has at least one nostril, so Im going to keep a close eye on him, and get ready to do the shower thing. If this doesn't work, I'll go get the baby rub vapor stuff.

If he doesn't have a fever, there's not much the ER could do....
I feel for him, though!! And, you, too-- it's hard when your child is sick and there's not much you can do. Poor baby!!!

I would imagine so, I think most infants/older people breathe through their mouths when they're asleep anyway. I think that's probably an instinctual thing!

Thank you, I bought his some infant cough and cold medicine, and I've been using vicks baby rub, and alternating tylenol between the cough and cold medicine. He's been doing a little better. When I had this cold ( I gave it to him) It took 3 days and was gone, so let's hope this is the case for him.
