The New Contented Little Baby Book

posted 6th Nov
Has anyone used the routines with success? I'm desperate to get my 4 month old on some kind of routine. If you've tried it what were the things you ahd trouble with?

I have to post and run sorry, about to go out, thanx for replies

I havent tried anything from a book, but my routine with my 4 month old is he wakes up, feed him, play with him, and he goes to sleep for a nap a little while later. . then he wakes up and we do it again over and over. The only exception is we give him another smaller bottle to eat right before we lay him down to bed. It helps him feel full and sleep longer in the night.

bella is the same, i was meaning more of a routine with times and things so i know what to expect throughout the day. she had a checkup yesterday and was so tired and grumpy that the doctor couldnt get her to smile or hold her own head up, if she was on a better routine i couldve made the appointment for a happier time in the day

It worked while I was breastfeeding Blaiz then when I switched to formula it messed up the routine and I didn't try to put him back on it

I dont know that book but your LO is at the PERFECT age for Healthy Sleep habits, Happy Child by Weissbluth. Everything will change again at about 5 months as the baby's brain switches them from newborn-type sleep to adult-type sleep patterns. The book is awsome and i wish i had read it when my LO was 4 months. It covers childrens sleep up to 5 yrs as it changes and the challenges change.

what do you mean by changes to adult sleep patterns?
my LO sleeps 9-10 hours at night already so its not night sleeping i mind, its just during the day, she sleeps for30-45 hour every 2 hours, spends 20-25 mins feeding and the rest is play timeand its the constant-ness of it thats draining me, by the time ive cleaned up the toys, cleaned out her bottle(if shes had one) and had something quick to eat shes awake again

Oh, we had that crappy-nap situation too. It was so frustrating!
At about 5 months their brain switches the type of sleep. There are a few things that happen but i can only remember 2. Onehas to do with the deep and light sleep pattern and one has to do with the daily cycle. The second has to do with sleep schedule. He thinks this is the natural schedule for most babies 5-9 months:
7ish awake
9ish 1st nap for an hour or more
12:30ish 2nd nap for an hour or more
4:00ish nap for 15-30 mins
6-8 pm bedtime depending on the baby's tiredness and the day's activities.

Also, the part of the brain that learns to night sleep is different than the part of the brain that learns to nap.

hmm that sort of makes sense, its 10pm so it might make more sense in the morning!
thanx   I'm gonna give it a try the week after next. next weeks goal is to get her back to self settling then we can try and work on a routine. Its tempting to just switch her to all formula(instead of half and half) because she was going 4 hourly feeds on formula, and its only 2 hourly now

yes, formula sticks with them better than breast milk.
BTW, my LO only slept solidly thru the night when we switch to whole milk instead of formula at night.
