Anorexia/Bulemia

posted 6th Nov
I have a friend who was anorexic and bulemic 2 yrs ago. She weighed around 85 pounds. She's at a better weight, but not healthy for her height just yet, but she's doing better. She came to me yesterday and said she wanted to TTC but asked if it was possible because of the anorexia and bulemia. I told her I didn't know. My question is does it make it harder or impossible if she were to try and conceive? Has anyone gone through any of this?

it does make it harder. especially if she stopped getting her period. she needs to get healthy and stay healthy before she TTCs.

i was anorexic my last two years in highschool, and i still battle with it today. BUT i eat very healthy, now, no junk food but very balanced and healthy meals. about a year...maybe half a year after i was severely anorexic i conceived, and five weeks ago i gave birth to a healthy weight, healthy overall baby girl. she was seven pounds, twelve ounces and she was two weeks early. so, it IS possible. she just has to make sure she eats, doesn't purge, and takes vitamins regularly. i don't know how severe her case is , but i know that mine was pretty severe and things turned out wonderfully for us  .

I battled my own ED from age 11-23 (when I got pregnant). The lowest I've been was about 95lbs which is not too bad for 5'2.

I don't think she's had her period for 2 yrs. It was to the point where that stopped, and her hair was falling out. She went to rehab and doesn't do it anymore, but she's still not healthy, and still doesn't have her period.

I was both anorexic and bulimic for 4-5 years. I was healthy for a few years (about 2) before I got pregnant. I had not one single problem. I wasn't even trying to get pregnant. However, I know for many women it can cause problems and effect their chances at getting pregnant. If your friend stopped having periods during her E.D. then they may cause some issues with fertility.

Yes. She is malnourished. She needs to COMPLETELY recover. Not only would she be putting her baby's life in danger she would be putting her own in danger as well.
Why would she want to take care of a child if she cannot fully take care of herself?
The average pregnant woman should gain between 25 and 35 pounds to have a healthy child. Telling this to an anorexic person is like telling a normal person to gain 100 pounds.
If she got pregnant before being fully recovered, she could seriously deplete her own system because the baby will take nourishment from her. She may also find herself struggling with depression and exhaustion associated with malnutrition.

She's about 5'5. So, I don't think 85 pounds was good for that weight. She looked horrible. There was no fat on her.

Well, for two years she was puking like 3 times a day for about 30 minutes. I think at the time she just didn't care about the risks.

Not a problem. I hope your friend gets healthy before she tries to conceive.

I will be sure to tell her. She's been eating a lot healthier and is almost to the healthy weight for her height. I told her to keep going to the doctors and making sure she was healthy enough. Then when she's back at her weight, and everythings good to TTC. I didn't know much to tell her though about the risks from her disorder. Everybody's different, I guess. Some can conceive. Some can't. That's why I thought I'd ask you ladies.
