re: smoking while pregnant?

You are one smart lady.

I agree with everyone, quite cold turkey. This issue has been discussed lots before. They say ween yourself if you are far along in your pregnancy because you can go through nicotine withdrawal and stress your body as well as your child. The main concern for smoking during pregnancy as Aido's Mama has stated is oxygen withdrawal. When smoking, not only are you putting in chemicals in your body, you're also inhaling carbon (combustion aka burning breaks down the compounds in the cigarette and air to create carbon). The carbon then attaches to the hemoglobin on your red blood cell, which means it is taking up space on the blood cell, space for oxygen. The oxygen reduced blood circulates to you and baby, which means less oxygen to you and your baby. Lack of oxygen can cause a lot of developmental issues, especially in something that is so tiny and growing so rapidly in such a short amount of time.

honestly.. knowing everything I did affected my child's life is the one and only thing that help me quit. That may sound like bs, but I think it's how the majority of us did it.

No, that doesn't sound like bs to me. i totally get where you are coming from. It's just hard because my mom, best friend, SO and extended family smoke also. My SO has cut down alot, which has helped me in the long run. I have gotten to where i don't think about wanting a cigarette while i'm by myself at all. I've asked my mother to cut down on the amount she smokes around me also. I KNOW i have the strength to quit and i've cut down ALOT more than i thought i'd be able to...and alsoi know how much this baby means to me. Thanks for the advice ladies=].

My daughter's dad smoked and his mom and stepdad did, too. He was respectful enough to go outside, but they would not. I literally had to threaten to not come around anymore. We aren't together anymore, but he eventually quit and so did his parents. They had smoked for 35 years, so I know you can do it

Lol, thanks.

I just get sick of reading "your baby is eating/drinking what you are and breathing in the same things as you!"

Errrr, really? Where was this noted by medical professionals? Because I'd really like to read the study that states that! lol

Yes, they are directly affected by everything you do and/or don't do. But not in the way some people confuse it to be.

You are very welcome. These things aren't taught in school and people just need to self educate themselves. I don't really on BG much. The advices women here give her very good advices but a lot of them don't provide sound explanation. The placenta is semi-permeable. It lets certain things through to the baby and keeps the rest out.

I had an argument with a mom here when I first joined. She tried to argue with me that mom and baby's blood mixes and my argument is that mom and baby's blood doesn't mix unless there's a tear in the placenta or umbilical cord and she insists that she's right and I'm wrong because she's going to school to learn about that stuff and the books she paid a lot of money for and the professors teaching her who paid a lot of money to go to school said so. Made me laugh because she said she paid a lot of money to learn this stuff whereas I have hands on experience with it. I worked in a hospital at that time, with doctors, nurses, pathologists and such...and I worked in transfusion services (blood bank) so my work was directly related to that. So to her, my education and hands on experience meant nothing.

I think women should listen to those with experience as well as do their own research from different sources and make their own deductions. Education doesn't need to end once you step out of school or once you've achieved a degree. There are always a lot more you can learn by yourself just by reading and experimenting. Enough of my blabbing.

I hope everyone who is noting all of the larger sized babies that were born to mother's who smoked while pregnant, know that just because they're born bigger, doesn't mean they're healthy. Not by any means.

And just because they show no signs of having issues at birth doesn't mean problems won't arise later on in life.

My friend smoked all through her pregnancy with her son and he was born at 10lbs some odd oz and he was a great size until he hit about 12 months. He's now three and still the size of like and 18 month old. He also has terrible asthma and doesn't speak as well as he should for his age.

I quit as soon as I starting getting morning sickness...mostly because cigarettes made me sick to my stomach. Babies can be a perfectly healthy weight..even though you smoke. But they could have problems later in life like asthma & nervous system problems. Do you really want to do that to your baby just because you don't have the willpower to quit smoking?

But like I said I quite like a month after found out! & I've found out about both of my pregnancies at like 4 weeks along, so yeah! Quit cold turkey! I did both times...

I quit cold turkey, didn't hurt my baby. As long as you quit as soon as possible, that's the important thing.

Quit cold turkey.

My cousin refused to quit smoking since other family members have smoked the entire time they were pregnant and their babies were fine for the most part. Her baby came two weeks early at five pounds and her cord snapped before she was out. When she did get out she wasn't getting enough air so she had to go to the NICU. The doctor said the cord likely snapped from her smoking and being around the smoke so much.
