Race, Food Stamps and Kids

posted 6th Nov

-FRom the article:

• 90 percent of black children will be in a household that uses food stamps. This compares to 37 percent of white children.

• Nearly one-quarter of all American children will be in households that use food stamps for five or more years during childhood.

• 91 percent of children with single parents will be in a household receiving food stamps, compared to 37 percent of children in married households.

• Looking at race, marital status and education simultaneously, children who are black and whose head of household is not married with less than 12 years of education have a cumulative percentage of residing in a food stamp household of 97 percent by age 10.

What do you ladies think of this?? How do we fix this? And what do you make of the racial differences?

As for single parents recieving food stamps that understandable and to people who are ill. Other than that I dont think its fair because we have to freakn work and pay for our own food and barely have enough to live on. This is a touchy topic and thats all about I can say on it without coming off wrong.

And I like your Siggy!

Born in the system=raised in the system. It's kinda a generational thing. Their parants and their parents parents were on them so that's all that they've known.
And it does seem like blacks have more kids and more kids=more money. It's all just a nasty circle.

I believe that news organizations can manipulate statistics to make it say whatever they want.

I think this is very touchy. My husband and I do recieve foodstamps, but every penny we make is reported to DSS. Plus, we are both in college, and I only have one year left. So I don't see anything wrong with people getting assistance until they can do it on their own.

And as far as the whole race thing goes, it's just a statistic. Africans have enough sense to know that if they need help, they can get it. Where as most Caucasians look down on people who have to turn to the government for help.

JMO.

Exactly. In general, most of the Caucasian population look down on it. Some even see it as a weakness, or a sign of incompentence if you will. Which isn't a bad thing, it's just a general observation.

I agree with you. I can see why you would have food stamps, because in your case you need them. But I know tons of people who just get food stamps, so they don't have to do anything, but yet, they can go out and spend hundreds of dollars on expensive things and lavish vacations. My sister-in-law does that, and it makes me so mad.
