I thought that as well about Pertussis....but until they receive all 3 shots (2, 4 and 6 months) they are not 100% in the clear until then and that goes for any vaccination where they need more than one injection.
And I agree about RSV and Flu that there is nothing they can do however, IMO I would like to know what my son has so I can be better educated on how to properly address the illness, KWIM? Not to mention, a chest x ray always makes me feel better when a chronic cough is concerned. That way you know it hasn't gone any further than what you know of. Ugh, babies and illnesses are so stressful

OP, I hope he is better today...........

Yeah, they aren't 100% protected from pertussis until they've had all of the boosters, but the chances of them getting it is markedly decreased if they've been vaccinated at all. Pertussis is probably one of the scariest diseases I've ever seen......

I understand what you mean about wanting to know the diagnosis though, it's totally understandable.

Babies are really stressful, especially when they're ill. They can't really tell you whats wrong, so it can be really scary at times.

Oh definitely....having the first shot is better than nothing at all. I just know that my son will always be vaccinated against something that could potentially kill him if contracted.
What are your thoughts on the chicken pox vac that they get at 12 months? I think it is called Varicella or something like that. I was thinking of opting out on that one but I don't know if I can because my sons private school might require it. Maybe I can delay it if they will let me? Anyway, regardless of what their policy is what do you think about it? I mean, I got chicken pox as a kid. I was old enough to remember how horrible it was having it all over including my ears, mouth and butt crack! I remember my mom putting meds on all the spots while my three older sisters ran by and laughed at me   I just see chicken pox as something a kid gets and it not being a life threatening illness.

Although chicken pox can at times be life threatening.....it is rare. I opt out of that one. Kids can still end up with chicken pox after being vaccinated, it's just less severe....kind of like the flu shot. Usually chicken pox is usually more of an annoyance, most kids don't get that sick, usually the ones who do have underlying medical conditions. I view the varicella vaccine as unnecessary.

I do believe that some people will give it on a delayed schedule.....like 18 months and then a booster around age 5 or 6.....

I'm usually pro vaccination with the exception of chicken pox, flu and this H1N1. Those I don't do.......

Yeah, we have followed the vaccination schedule thus far but I have really been thinking about his 12 month shots. I really don't want him to have the varicella. We aren't doing the H1N1 but we did do the seasonal flu shot.I just really felt I should considering he is in childcare everyday.

That's understandable. As long as you're making informed decisions, thats all that matters. Alot of pediatricians will try to talk you into things without giving you full information. It's always best to do your own research before making decisions about vaccinations and medications. Sounds like you do

If I were a SAHM and could control who he was around, etc.I know vaccinations would be different for us. I just feel in his situation, the benefits outweigh the risks based on our current day to day obligations. Luckily I have a very nice, down to earth pedi and not some phycho "know it all" who thinks they can tell me what to do since they have a degree.

It definitely sounds like you've weighed risk vs benefit and made the right decision for your kids. My kids get all vaccinations per the AAP recommended schedule except chicken pox, flu and H1N1. My kids go to a babysitter who only babysits one other child, so I choose not to get them the flu shot......my oldest is in school, but he still doesn't get the flu shot. Some of the studies I've read regarding the seasonal flu shot indicate that it isn't as effective as it's made out to be concerning flu prevention and prevention of serious complications. I just don't think it's necessary for my kiddos but it is for others. Thats the beauty of being a parent, you know what's best for your kids
