104 fever

posted 6th Nov
How bad is a temp of 104 in a 5 year old? My nephew came home yesterday complaining with his throat hurting and had a104 temp. My mom gave him some motrin and my brother took him to the er. His temp was still 103.4 an hour and a half later when they checked it there. Well they tested for the flu (he's already had swine flu) and strep (he's already had too) and mono and all came back negative. They said his white blood count was high and they gave him some cold medicine and sent him home and told him to see his regular dr today. His appointment is not until 2:45 today so I was just wondering if anyone here had any idea what else this could be?

my 5 y/o was in the ER with a 102.8(i think) fever and they said it was low grade. all they did was give her Tylenol. they said she had a viral infection, basically a cold. rotate motrin and tylenol. that should help

104 temp is very high. Probably close to dangerous for him.

It probably is the flu. And if he has had it more than 48 hours they can't give tamiflu which is why they probably gave cold meds and sent him home.

Just keep pushing fluids and motrin, if it is not responsive, bring him back to the ER.

It could be some sort of bladder or kidney infection. boys get them too and they are hard to detect. but such a high fever does point to some sort of bacterial infection somewhere in the body. That would explain the white blood cell count too.

Even though fevers seem scary, they arent anything to be super concerned about. They dont cause brain damage or anything.
It's probably something viral.
My daughter last winter was battling 105 fevers for a week and all we could do is stand by and wait for her to recover.
Hopefully the doctor can give you some ideas as to what it is, but just keep him hydrated. Thats the biggest danger with fevers is dehydration.

I was under the impression that 104 was pretty high. Poor kid, I hope he gets better soon. Wonder if its Seasonal Flu since the poor thing has already had H1N1

It's high, but if you take him they'll only tell you the same thing you already know. To hydrate him and to alternate between tylenol and motrin.

Does he have any other symptoms?

He's definitely fighting infection if his white cell count is up.

That;s for a newborn, esp if they have not had their 2 month shots. You have to go in for 100.4

just sore throat. In the past month he's had swine flu, strep throat, an ear infection, a virus and now whatever this is.
