It should. One great way to maximize the regions of your abs/sides that get hit with your ab workout is to do bicycles in the air as you remain in a half-situp pose. It's extremely efficient, I've found, for my pp body. Do 100 reps 2x a day and you'll see a difference in a week!!

I think the sit ups where you twist as you sit up are good for your sides and back.

dont get stuck doing just sit ups. do other ab excersises as well, leg lifts, flutter kicks, pilates 100's, and side to side alternating. mix it up and your stomach should be strong!

I change up my sit ups a bit   Lay down, put your feet flat on the floor, then take one leg, and place it across your other leg. But keep it bent at the knee. (It should look like you're making a tunnel, is my best way to describe it) Or in other words, place the left side/right sideof one foot on the opposite knee! Then as you sit up, twist to the knee thats poking out!
Hopefully this makes sense! They work your sides pretty good, along with your abs
