Quoting Fierce Mama:“ I'd agree with that, but most troops brush it off and act like its a joke.”
No one I have met has treated it as a joke. But they are all very embarrassed. I have a friend, old room mate I am close with who deployed with hubs 1st tour. He is completely unable to function in social situations now and flips around loud noises. They know he has ptsd and no one tries to help, everyone makes fun of him, even chain of command, and he doesn't wanna press it bc of the back lash he gets and the names hes called. He decided to PCS instead and try and "start over."
He failed his pre deployment briefing 2 mts ago. They gave him 3 therapy sessions and meds he can't take bc they make him sick and too tired to show up for work. He told them this, they said take them anyway. (he is a freakin space when he is on them and can't even hold a convo with me on the phone) He deployed couple weeks ago. I am so worried he won't come back bc of his condition.
IO am actully seeing a pattern now that I am replying.
I am civi. I went to the military hospital for meds since I stopped when I got pregnant with my son. They would not give me anxiety meds for the condition which I have been in-patient for and treated for since 5th grade. They said I was depressed and put me on citalopram? sp(sp?) The meds made me extremely nervous and upset, up for periods of 24hrs +, and too sick to eat. I call, they tell me the meds aren't making me sick I'm a sick person and thats why I am on them. A civi dr tells me that a person like me should have never even been put on this in the first place.
They made me feel really stupid when I called though and it took almost a full week for the mil dr to return my call.
They have also taken a few of my friends off their meds (one who has had long term treatment for PTSD since childhood) saying there is nothing wrong with them they are just butthurt over deployment and should learn to accept it.
Mental health issues seem to be looked at funny like pregnant 12 year olds or something...
