Every state is a little bit diffrent but they come to your house and evaluate your child and then they start classes usually 1-3 times a month for 45 minutes each session. They basically just play/read with your child and ask you of any improvements you seen.

Holden did not start speech until after he was in school, so my experience was that he would do things witht he speech teacher and she would send things home for him to do. We had been doing things on our own at home because he did not qualify for therapy before school-like blowing bubbles, blowing cotton balls across the table & gum chewing. Technically he did not even qualify for it thru the school, but we found a loop hole so to speak and got him in. Good luck-the earlier they start the better. And Holden was officially a speech therapy graduate last year when he was in the third grade.

they come out to my house, and play and interact with Fay.
if she starts to say a word they help her say it, and sound it out.
it's really cool, and at the end of the session they give you a report about where she's at.
is it with ECI or with a private speech thearpist?

My son went once for an evaluation about 2 months ago. A spot just opened up for him so he will be going frequently now. The first time we went she just tried to get him to use his words while they interacted. She asked us questions about his development. We have to drive about 45 minutes to the office.

Shepherd is already seeing a private therapist. She mostly plays with him and encourages him to say things so far...He's seen her twice, and has a standing appt weekly. He also is doing the birth to 3 program where they come to your house, they are coming for the first time tomorrow.

This week, he brought a flashlight to therapy, and she had a box of animals, and she turned off the lights and put out the animals one by one and made the sound that they made, and had him shine his light on them.

My youngest daughter was in speech therapy for a couple of years. She loved it. They played games that helped her to practice using the muscles she needed to to make the sounds. They also helped her learn the sounds to each letter. I honestly think that the reason she is such a good reader now is due to the speech therapy. She may need some more therapy as she is starting to back slide a bit.

sorry OP i have a question for everyone!.. at what point do you know if a child needs speech therapy or not??.. my nephew is 2 years and 4 months old. And he still only says ma, da, thruck (for truck), cat, and no..........
I know all children learn at different paces but do you guys think he is a bit delayed? with only having a few words?
because my boyfriends baby sister is the exact same age and she speeks in sentences.......

I'd say yes. Shepherd is 29 months old and they told me at 24 months he should have had a vocabulary of 50 words and the norm should have been speaking in 2 word sentences. And at two and a half that jumps to 400 words and 4 and 5 word sentences. Even if they are just a little slow to speak, I think it is important to get them in, just in case. Because something like 50% of them need it, and you cant tell which is which.

we went in for an evaluation and they interacted with him to check his social skills and how mentally developed he was.
Then they suggest classes that would be helpful.... they're fun classes for the kids..singing and stuff.
and they have on for the parents to go to that helps them communicate with their child
