Hi there although I do not have a baby with spina bifida I was born with it. It all depends on the severity of it I was lucky I can still walk but I don’t have use of the muscles in my bladder and bowls. I have had to see a few specialists once a year and sill see an urologist. there were a few concerns when I was around 2 of needing a shunt and when I was around 11 or so I was diagnosed with tethered cord, I have scar tissue around my spinal cord witch is common. the only thing I can really suggest is that as your child is growing up they have a lot of contact with people with the condition I never had that and I always felt like a outcast and would never want to talk about my spina bifida as I have grown older though it has been easier and I have helped educate people on it.

Thank you so much im glad you can walk  my main concern is that he wont be able to and he want be happy. He has control over his bladder they did a test and he was controling it but they arent sure about anything else his was right above his butt and it was a little bigger than a quarter he has a shunt and that seems to not bother him at all.I just want him to be happy and im trying to get as much information as i can so if he ever ask i can tell him

my sister has spina bifida & scoliosis she is 16 .
she has both types of spina bifida , or is it both types of scoliosis . I'll ask my mom  .

but she had to have back surgery , she has 16 screws in her back. She had to have a bone out of her butt removed to put in her back. She has nerve damage in her left leg as well.

she was suppose to be in a body brace and a leg brace. But she let peer pressure get to her and she don't wear it. She walks funny, but not to noticeable. But in this day and age. . a lot of teens notice it & make fun of her when she is at the mall   She has a curve in her body, & she can't walk for along time. . & it takes her forever to get up and down steps.

she can't sit a certain way, and if she sits for more than 5 mins in one position, her legs go numb and she gets " pins & needles " & falls to the ground if she tries to get up. We have to help her get up off the floor because she has trouble and she can't sit on like seats and benches because she has to sit at a slant and it hurts her.

This is her . .
