Fever in toddler - no other symptoms

posted 4th Nov
So tonight as I was getting my son ready for bed, he felt kinda warm. I took his temp (rectally) and was surprised to find it was 102.7!!! He has been acting totally fine all day and night, so I was very shocked. I gave him some Motrin, and before bed it was down to 101.4.

My dad is a doctor, and I called him and he said just to watch him and see how he is through the night and morning. My son has never had fevers with teething, and has had fevers two other times (1. an ear infection, and 2. hand , foot mouth disease). Both of those times, he had other symptoms before his fever started.

My question to you ladies is, have your toddlers gotten fevers out of the blue like this with no other symptoms? If so, did it develop into the flu or something else?

My baby woke up with a 102 fever out of the blue one morning. We took him to the doctor and they said it was H1N1. But he had other weird symptoms (he was lethargic, wouldn't smile at us or play with us, and he was red around the eyes etc...).

Yeah, that's what I was worried about. My mom is a preschool teacher and she said all her kids with the H1N1 have a high fever as the very first symptom.

The fever LITERALLY came out of the blue. Like one minute he was fine, adn then within a half hour he was burning up. But he never acted any differently.

I'm so confused and don't know if he's getting sick or what!

Oh...AND he did have the first shot of the H1N1 vaccine a few weeks ago. I was hoping he would be covered enough to ward off any danger of the swine flu until his next dose next week. Crossing my fingers!

Yes. Shaunna gets these mystery fevers often now since the weather here is beginning to get cool. The first couple of times the fever usually 100 to 101 was before her teeth began to pop out. Another time she ran a fever she had an infection that just ran its course...well that is what they told me. Anything under 104 is officially not a fever at my daughter's doctor's office. They told me to treat at home and once it got that high to go to the ER. Well it never did. She played and was her normal self the entire three days. Then poof the mystery fever went away. I would do like your dad said and keep a close eye of the fever. This last time she ran a fever was this past Sun I took her in to the dr office and turned out she had swine flu. She has been playing this entire time and all she had was the fever. It never got higher than 103. So just keep a close eye on the temp.

Hmmm...interesting! Thanks so much for sharing! I had no idea toddlers could have a fever with no other symptoms. I always feel like total ASS when I have a fever.

I'll definitely be keeping my eye on him. This helps a lot! Thanks!

Interesting. My niece got the H1N1 shot too and she wound up with a high fever afterward also. She got hers within a week of her shot though. But no other symptoms.

We didn't get the vaccine for our baby so we've got nothing to compare it to. The schools around here have tons of H1N1 cases though. Our doctor said that since our baby has been healthy since birth (no asthma or any other issues) he should get over it soon.

Yeah, he got his vaccine over 3 weeks ago, so I know it is not attributed to that. It is just so odd. I'm gonna go check on him right now. thanks girls!

Thanks! I think/hope he feels ok. He was acting 100% normal, so this is odd. I just checked on him and he's still warm. I don't want to wake up the poor guy just to stick a thermometer up his butt.
