What the hell-day care rant

posted 4th Nov
So on Monday our daycare lady told my husband that her daughter has an doctors appointment in Saskatoon, which is a couple hours away, on Tuesday and that her mother will be looking after the kids for a couple of hours. I had no problem with that as I met her mother and she is a great lady. When my husband went to pick up our daughter, there was a man there looking after the kids and the daycare workers mother was not there. My husband kind of asked who the hell are you. The guy states he is the mothers boyfriend and he is there becauses she had to work at 3:00. I'm pissed off as we have never met this man before and were not told he would looking after our daughter for a couple of hours. Her daughter had to see a specialist and knew maybe months in advance about this appointment. Had she told us about this appointment and that this man may have to look after our daughter for a couple of hours, I or my husband would have booked the day off.
I wonder how the otherparents felt when they picked up their kids and found a strange man looking after their kids.
The women who runs the daycare my daughter goes to is great with my daughter and my lo just loves her and I know she would never intentionally hurt my daughter or put her in harms way. I know the only reason she let this man watch the kids is that she trusts him but I want the option to say no.
I have to go and pick up my daughter in a couple of minute and do plan on talking to her about what happened.
Does anyone feel I'm over reacting?

No. you are not overreacting. You have a right to know who is watching your child & decide if you want that to happen. She didn't tell you correctly who would be watching her & I would be livid.

Maybe she was unaware of her mom leaving, and obviously they felt ok with doing this - I would def ask for 48 hours notice of any future appointments she may have - so you can reschedule or make alternative arrangements.

I would ask for a criminal record check, and the name of anyone who will be substituting in the future. Is she licensed, or is this a private home business?

She runs a licenced daycare out of her house. Your right she didn't know her mom was leaving, she found out when she got back that her mother left for work and let her boyfriend looked after the kids. She was not happy about it eventhough she does trust this man, she knew she was going to have alot of pissed off parents. I told her that it was unacceptable and that she has to let me know the next time she or her daughter has to be somewhere and someone else is going to look after the kids. If she does need a substitute, my husband and I have to meet this person first and get to know them and she has to be qualilfied.
I have 5 family leave days a year, where I can take time off at any time and with short noticed to take care of situations like this and I can't be denied the time off.

Thats a great thing. If she is licensed, she is required to inform the parents about the sub issue before hand - yes, she could find herself in alot of trouble by this one slip in scheduling. Def would not count on mom subbing again either! Hope she does not loose her license due to this!

I don't think it will happen again. Some of the other parents must have said something too because she was very nervous when I picked my daughter up today and she apologized. Yes she could loose her licence if someone complained but no one pulled their kid out of her daycare so I don't think anyone is going to make a formal complaint.
