A few pacifier questions!!

posted 4th Nov
When did you take your LO's paci away?
And how did you do it? Cold turkey or gradually?

I used one until I was FOUR! I'm not doing that with Layla so I was wondering what is the best way to go about taking it away.

I have heard alot of ppl try to do it around the same time as they pull the awaybottle if not sooner, I have heard that doing it cold turkey over a weekend seems to work best and by the beginning of the week they don't even realize its gone.

My 17 mos old still uses one. Actually, she LOVES that thing.. She calls it a "Bay" since she can't say pacifier. I am torn about when to take it away. My 3 y/o was/is a thumb sucker. She still sucks her thumb when she rides in the car and goes to sleep. I feel like my other child should have her "bay" for those times, too.

My daughter stopped using them all on her own around 8-9 months.

With my son we did it cold turkey. It was hell for a few days and his little heart was broken but after that he was fine but i also didnt take it away until he was like 2 1/2 and i think it was alot harder for him being older and all.
With this baby if he/she takes the pacifier i think i will gradually take it away (like only at nap/bed time) and do it a lot sooner then with my son

good luck mama

Oops.

How did you get rid of the bottle? I thought about putting herformula in sippy cups, but I've tried at least 6 different kinds and she doesn't take any of them.

I've been trying to limit the paci use to her crib, but she's been teething and super crabby lately so I just give in and let her have it when she starts complaining.

I have no idea how to take away the bottle either! In my family, everyone waits until ages 2-3 to start taking stuff away, but I don't want to wait that long. The sooner I can get all this unnecessary crap out of my life, the better. I'm sick of having to search under beds at 2 am for pacis. Eff that.

We call them "noonies." Most of the time Layla could take it or leave it, but since she's been teething, it seems like she wants it more often. Like that's the only thing that can calm her down.

Ugh... I wish! She didn't take it until she was 2 weeks and I only gave in b/c she was using ME as a pacifier and falling aslep EVERY time she would nurse. Bad idea.

start with taking the bottle away and give her a sippy during the day thats what I do, Jarrett gets sippy all day and bottle at bed(and the occasional nap) so then he associates the bottle with bedtime and I am going to eventually pull that one too, I wanted to get through the formula to milk transition before I tried to pull the bottle.but anywayseventually she will have to learn to use the sippy. I use a soft tip one its a munchkin brand one so it seemed to make the switch a little easier. I don't have to pull a paci Jarrett never took one and to be honest I really wasn't too crushed by that one!

My nephew was 2 1/2 when his was taken away. My sister just told him that he lost all of them and he cried about it a couple of times, but got over it in a couple of days. It actually wasn't that bad, but I feel that when they can talk with the things in their mouths, it's time to say bye-bye.

How long did it take for him to take the sippy? I've been giving them to her for about 2 months now. Not consistently though so that could be my problem. She didn't really take to the paci until she was like 6 weeks. Most of the time she would gag on it, but every now and then she would take it, so I forced it on her. I wish I wouldn't have done that though. This is what I was trying to avoid when I was saying I wasn't giving her one. I didn't want to deal with taking it away. Sleep deprivation is a nasty thing... I was desparate, so I gave her one.

My 17 mos. old tries to sing with it in... I tell her to take it out and she'll let me. But, if she sees it on the table, she'll scream for it. It's kind of like, out of sight, out of mind with her.
