Seriously attached...

My son is going to be 1 year old =) on the 17th. I introduced a sippy cup when he was six months old, and he liked it. Around 9 months, I started skipping bottles and giving him more solids and sippy cup (with water or formula), to try to start a bit of the weaning process.
Though I started it then, he is still not weaned from the bottle. He won't drink formula in the sippy cup, he chews on it and then gets tired of it and throws it down. He screams and screams for a bottle when I give him formula in his sippy. Recently, he won't even eat for me. This is my little man that used to eat whatever you put in front of him and never complain. Now it's all about temper tantrums and screaming.
He seems to be overly attached to his bottle. And I know it's partly my fault. He will hold the bottle in his mouth while he plays, not even drinking it. So I have been taking it away and putting it away as soon as he's done with it (out of sight out of mind), but still having issues with weaning.

Any suggestions?

ugh my son would do that to.. hold it in his mouth while playing not drinking it... but he did it w/ his cuppy.. we used a soft spout and he treated that JSUT like a bottle.. im in the process of 'weaning' him to a hard top sippy cup... he drinks from them fine but he likes milk from the soft spout.. but again he treats that like a bottle.. bits through the spout... ect..

he hasn't had one since sunday.. hes' been cranky but i have just been letting him CIO.. its the only way i know of b/c if he see's one or i give in.. it'll just be going 10 steps backwards.

I think hes way to young to wean off a bottle. Hes only a year and still needs to suck. Your going to have a real problem on your hands if you start frustrating him this early. Oviously he needs to still have that sucking for comfort and theres nothing wrong with that. Just leave it be theres no reason to take away the bottle THIS early.

reccommended age to wean from bottle is 12 months.

One year is the time to take it away.. if not earlier.. old fashion much?

yeah.. if you continue.. that 'urge to suck' will become a way to soothe and that's all they'll know.. they wont know how to self soothe.. and taking that away later on is MUCH harder... comming from first hand experience.
kaleb used his soft spout just like a bottle... we're 'weaning' now and its hellll w/ a 19month old.... pure hell.. lol

yeah i completely skipped the soft spout.. she can have it with WATER @ night if she's being really cranky.. but it's milk in her hard spouts all day and even before nap.

Thanks for the advice ladies, my dad took my bottle away from me at 18 months, cold turkey, and apparently I did fine without it. The thing about the hard tipped sippy's, my son can't suck from it. I have one and he seriously does not know how to do it, I've tried it to see how hard you have to suck in and you do have to suck quite a bit, the recommended age on the sippy is 9 months. The soft sippy is the one he actually drinks water from without many issues, but if it's formula, he screams. I'll just have to keep trying.

& to the mommy that thinks he's too young, thanks for the advice, but I've been told by many AND my dr. to try to have him weaned off the bottle by age 1 because they get even more attached after age 1 and it's a bigger battle to fight.

He bites huge holes in his nipples too, so I'm getting tired of buying new ones every 2 weeks...

No I agreed that you should take it away by a year...
The girl that said otherwise i thought was old fashioned.

i cant give them to kaleb at all anymore.

he was going to bed at night w/ a nuby w/ milk.. bad i know.. but i cut that out 2 weeks ago and just started giving him an empty nuby or one w/ water in it... he was fine w/ that.. then we switched to hard top sippies only and he's ok for the day but at night time its all out war.. he was up til 9 [usual bed time is 730] screaming for his baba.
