Being an Independent Woman/Mother

posted 4th Nov
In this day and age do you think a woman/mother should be independent?
I understand that some of you are SAHM's, but what if something was to happen to your SO and you had to support your family.

What I mean by Independent is you are educated enough to get a job that will support your family, have a drivers license and a car, be able to pay bills on your own, and not depend on any other resource for help.

It's sad to me cause there are a lot of mothers out there that are dependent on their SO, parents, etc.

I'm independent. Wouldn't be very far if I wasn't.

If something happens to my SO, I could support my son and I, and pay bills. I just like being a SAHM.

I amdependenton my husband because I can be right now. But I am finishing pharmacy school in spring 2011. So I will have a great paying job to take care of bills and my kids on my own.

I agree! My mom has always been a SAHM even after we left the nest. If something was to happen to her husband I'm not sure what she would do. I on the other hand have learned from watching her. I work a full-time job, have my own house, car, bills ect. i dont depend on anyone.

A lot of people are dependent on someone else however that is how they choose to live in order to stay at home with their children....I don't really think it's your place to judge that as being sad.

I'm a SAHM, and will be as long as possible.
but i have my degree and I can/will work if I need to.
BUT if something DOES happen to my husband, he's already taken steps to make sure I won't have to go straight out and find a job to provide for our family. He said that's his job, whether he is here or not.

Nothing wrong with being a SAHM, as long as you can support your child if something happened to your SO.

Women, men, mothers, fathers-everyone should be independent. It is naive and extremely poor planning and judgement to rely on anyone but yourself. No one knows what tomorrow will bring. I believe that everyone (especially those with children) should plan ahead and be prepared.

I agree that it is important to be able to support yourself and children in the event that that you are reduced to one income.
I would not be able to afford our mortgage without my husbands income, but we wouldn't be in a cardboard box, maybe a crappy ass apartment.

I'm dependent on my husband to make the money. Thankfully he has a job that pays very well so I don't have to work. He has life insurance that will pay the house, truck off IF he were to die, so all I'd have to do is find a job that will pay the utilities
I have a paid for car and drivers license and would be able to find a job to provide for my girls, I have no college degree, but in this day and time what can a college degree get you except a huge debt. The trade/labor jobs are what are flourishing in this day and time.

I'm not judging anyone, just giving my opinion on being a mother.

That's great he has that plan in place.

I'm dependent on my husband right this second, but I just finished one degree and I am starting another. If anything were to happen to him I could get a job and take care of my children. Although I think that if you depend on your husband that is something some mothers want to sacrifice to be at home with their children. I don't think it's sad. I think it takes a lot of strength and trust to depend on your husband to provide for your family.
