What am i gonna do with my life....

posted 4th Nov
sounds very dramatic, but it's not.sry   I didnt know where to post this exactly but anywho here i go...
Before meeting Oly i wasin university and i studied international politics with a minor in development of the third world. All the jobs that are offered in this domane for starters are mainly volunteer work in underpriviledged regions of the globe. Now with children i can't see myself doing it soooo, i'm planning on going back to school in a year and half. BUT, im not sure of what i should go into. i have two options. One is a «technique» in documentation (think librarian, or archivist (SP..i only know the word in french.im terribly sorry)which is three years in a «CEGEP» , it would be part time becuase i already have my main classes (Ie, French, gym, philo)and would only require the classes applicable to the «technique». so my SO would only have to watch Edgar a couple of hours a day and could go back to work after my few classes (he works from home so his hours are as he wishes). I could have more children sooner since the program is less lengthy BUT the salary varies from 16-21 $ an hour and there is an employment rate of 80%...with that said CEGEP costs 120 pluss bvooks per session.

My second option is to get my k-12 bachelors degree. its a four year full time program with a two year «subbing» period which is obligatory in Quebec where you work only when there is work in different regions of the province, which could be a little more difficult to work out transportation. but the pay is 24-30$ an hour and you get summers and all the gov. benefits automatically. But i would have to wait a long time beofre having more children. Edgar would be around 8 when he could start having siblings. and university is 1200 plus books a session. But being a teacher has been one of my childhood dreams.

So should i take the more lengthy option and continue the family later on or should i have a fmaily sooner and skip out on a few bucks...? what would you guys do. oh and i know that i still have a lot of time to think about it, but id like to reeeealy think thngs through since i have a university degree in something that i really love learning about but cant use....(smart move..i know   )

I think that if it were me I'd do the CEGEP program. The pros add up faster than the cons and if you were to take the courses, get certified and get a job in the field there's nothing saying that in the future, if you still wanted to teach, you couldn't pursue that. If you go the B.Ed rout you've spent thousands of dollars, have tons of practical hours to fill and no guarantee that you'll have a job at the end or even like teaching when you get there. I personally wouldn't want to wait 8 years between children either.

thank you for your honest answer. i do think that you are rgiht. and living in quebec you know the educational system is sort of lame for the new teachers. are you guys having nice weather where you live (its quite cloudy and cold in the Lanaudiere region   i really miss having sunshine.

I do feel bad for the new teachers in Quebec. Even in Ontario they get a pretty crummy deal. I have a friend who has 2 undergrad degrees plus her B. Ed and a whole bunch of specialty courses and training. Lost of volunteer experience etc. and still couldn't get a teaching job anywhere unless she was willing to move up north to one of the tiny little communities. She's actually given up and is doing her M. Div right now to become a United Church minister.
It's 3 degrees today and overcast. We had really bright sun on Monday but it was super cold! I wonder when we're going to start getting snow. I predict we don't get any real snow before December but it'll be cold and icky between now and then.

we already got some! it stayed for 2 days which is quite good for de la neige folle. i bet that around the 20th we have had our first big snow storm....the farmers almanach is calling for a realll bad winter. i guess itll be the perfect season for hot cocoa and a family movie !

Mmmmm.... cocoa and a movie sounds like a great plan. I'm really happy that John's planning to take the entire month of January off when the baby comes because if this winter is anything like two winters ago it'll be almost impossible to get the driveway cleared enough for him to get to work every day. My only real concern is that there'll be a huge snow storm when I go into labour. I have a history of very fast labour (#3 was 1.5 hours from start to finish) and since I couldn't get a midwife I've got to travel 25 minutes (in good weather) to the hospital. I do not want to give birth in the car on the way to the hospital in the middle of a snow storm.
