Military Question

posted 4th Nov
Ok, my husband is active duty Navy. Our home of record is Texas but we are living (renting, as of right now) in Virginia where he is stationed. My car is still registered in my mom's name and in the state of Texas with Texas plates, and both of our DL's are Texas. We are purchasing our first home here in Virginia (should be closing in about a week)...since we are techincally Virginia residents (since we own property here in VA) will I need to get my car registered in VA and get VA plates? What about our DL's? Can we keep them as Texas or do we need to switch to VA? I know that since we are military, not owning property in VA, we cant get in trouble for my Texas registered car, and our DL's, but what about now that we will own property in VA? Any advice would be great!

No I don't think so it might go by state. But we just bought a house here and our home or record is still NJ we still pay NJ income taxes. And I still have KY DL.

Any AD member of the military has the choice to claim residency in two states... Their home of record state and the state they are stationed in.
I received an email from our Sgt. Major recently that said they are affording that right to spouses as well. (There's a bill going through congress now)

Your husband doesn't have to change his DL, but you may have to.
I've found it to be easier to just switch everything over everytime we move. Just incase if you were to get a ticket in Virginia with a Texas DL they might tack on a surcharge since you're out of state...

Me and my husband just got a brand new mazda, we're originally from WI but seeing that we bought the car in NC they are making us register the car here. If you have a car thats already registered in one state you don't have to switch it to another.

They can take a form to the court when they pat their ticket
I got a ticket from California Highway Patrol and they tried to tack on the out of state surcharge

its annoying, but there is a link on the TX DPS site where you enter in your VIN number and they mail you your vehicle registration to your out of state address.

We just did it when we moved to CA in May

We just bought a car so it's registered here, but before that they were both still registered in NJ with NJ plates, our one car still is also.

Oh I didn't know that. I usually switch my DL if I know we're going to be somewhere for a little while. lol

I got an abstract tattoo of NJ on my back when I was stationed in Pensacola a few years ago because I missed my hometown... Now, not so much.... Lovely.
